Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases, has an immediate opening for a Principal Process Engineer to join our Process Technology team in our Standard Plants Product Line (SPPL). The preferred work location is at our Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania but other locations will be considered for qualified candidates. This position will be primarily focused on our H2 PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption), CO2 VSA (Vacuum Swing Adsorption) and other non-atmospheric adsorption systems.The SPPL Process Engineering team provides engineering support for our line of productized plants including Adsorption Separation Plants, Ammonia Dissociation Plants, Electrolysis Plants and Steam Methane Reforming Plants. Our business supports customers in a diverse range of industries including hydrogen for mobility, refining, metals processing, glass manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, foods processing, electronics, and chemical and petrochemical manufacturing to name a few.
You will implement projects in all regions of the globe. As a result, we ask that you be willing to travel both domestically and internationally as needed. Travel duration is typically one to three weeks. Travel requirements are typically 20% or less per year with an effort to maintain a healthy work life balance.
As a process engineer you will:
- Author or review process calculation and specification documents and vendor documents for use in Projects and Products including vessels, rotating equipment, adsorbents and package equipment.
- Develop and review process simulations.
- Participate in P&ID development and in Hazard and Operability Reviews.
- Share creative solutions and prepare Process estimates for project and product development efforts and identify process technical risk items.
- Assist in updating and maintaining our current product portfolio.
- Develop new adsorption product offerings which includes creating new process design methods.
- Help develop new product offerings.
- Develop and maintain Product-specific Process execution plans for new and existing products.
- Provide loading, commissioning, startup/performance test and troubleshooting support either remotely or in the field.
- Support other Standard Plant Products and Projects such as PHGs from a Process Engineering perspective as necessary.
- Have good problem-solving abilities, be ambitious, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills enabling you to work well within a multi-disciplinary design team located in multiple geographies and to liaise directly with suppliers and clients when required.
Desired skills, experience, and attributes:
- A bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
- 6-10 years of engineering design experience with a demonstrated ability to develop calculations and specifications.
- 3-5 years of PSA, particularly Hydrogen, related design (preferred)or operation experience.
- Capability to read, understand and develop P&IDs.
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis and Accident Investigation, as requested. This includes the ability to diagnosis PSA issues by interpreting PSA pressure trends.
- Coordinate functional issues involving plant reliability, operability and maintenance, while providing technical liaison support to Global Operations.
- Be cross-functional among other Process Technology functions (e.g., Process Safety, Process Systems, Process Controls, Commissioning and Start-Up).
- Product based approach to design.
- Proficient with performing PSA simulations.
- Personal accountability as well as a willingness to ask for help when needed is important.
- Ability to prioritize project, product and other commitments while executing multiple activities.
- Able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the design of process plants.
