Position Summary

An experienced laboratory technician is needed to work in the Department of Neuroscience at the Washington University School of Medicine as part of a basic neuroscience research laboratory. The position assists with the technical aspects of experiments as well as laboratory maintenance. Actively contributes to the laboratory research program by assisting with the design, execution and analysis of experiments.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs complex analysis/projects according to research protocols, including cell culture, microscopy, and animal-based experiments.
  • Assists with studies on the molecular mechanisms of autism and neurodevelopmental disorders. Lab studies will include biochemical analysis of genetically engineered mouse models of neurodevelopmental disease, and cell biological characterization of brain tissue and primary cell culture systems.
  • Executes biochemical, molecular biology, and genomic assays including collection of data, preparation of solutions and set-up and maintenance of equipment.
  • Oversees and assists with the management of the mouse colony.
  • Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
  • Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  • Assists with ordering of equipment and reagents, and general lab maintenance and cleaning.
  • Assists in the training and development of technicians, explaining methods and procedures; acts as a group leader to other technicians.

Working Conditions

Works in laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards. Must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years.

Salary Range

$17.86 - $30.39 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
