The Process Shift Supervisor (PSS) is responsible and accountable for the performance of his team and safe and compliant operation of their unit. The PSS is responsible to ensure the daily compliance of all Process Safety, Occupational Safety, product quality and optimization requirements of their unit.

Responsibilities:
Provide Leadership by:
- Leading the training programs for all Operators on your team. Ensuring that the individual Operator training plans are met. Responsible to ensure procedure review and sign offs are completed.
- Delegating responsibility and authority to reports as required.
- Frequently coaching Operators to gauge and develop understanding of unit and refinery operations.
- Assessing, driving and reviewing training progress for all operators.
- Attending daily 0800 and 8:45 weekday and 12:30am and pm weekend meetings.
- Leading team meetings and what-if drills. Minimum of one documented hands-on what if drill every two weeks. Drills are not complete until complete understanding by the team is achieved.
- Rolling out new/updated procedures and other required information to shift team. Responsible to ensure MOC sign offs are complete and understanding of the change by team is achieved.
- Ensuring that all shift and production reports are accurate and sent out.
- Ensuring unit hazards are forwarded on to the area team and take immediate action as appropriate to remediate.
- Provide mentorship to operators
Establish an HRO Culture by:
- Encouraging the Operators to view mistakes and unplanned events as learning opportunities by assessing causes, driving corrective actions, sharing lessons learned, and validating the effectiveness of corrective actions.
- Responding professionally and consistently to mistakes by all personnel.
- Frequently meeting with team to discuss feedback, lessons learned, and future facility activities.
- Providing positive feedback to team members displaying team backup and questioning attitude.
- Being respectful and open while receiving feedback.
- Holding the area team accountable to providing sufficient resources and support to correct known deficiencies.
- Ensure pre-job huddles and after-action reviews are completed as required.
Achieve Facility Targets by:
- Ensuring operations are conducted in accordance with the commercial and area team targets. Safe operating limits override targets.
- Conducting a thorough, formal turnover, and lead the Shift Engagement Brief
- Ensuring the facility is in a clean, reliable and efficient state.
- Verifying key safeguards in the facility are in place and functioning and that Operators are knowledgeable on emergency shutdown systems, emergency response plans, Safe Operating Limits, and the operability of safety devices.
- Ensuring qualified Operators are always in place and fit for duty and that meet training requirements.
- Leading and participating in investigations followed by sharing of lessons learned, driving corrective actions, and validating the effectiveness of corrective actions across the facility.
- Monitor sample results to ensure all products are on spec and all environmental limits are being met.
Monitor and Solve facility conditions by:
- Routinely touring the units to observe conditions and discuss ongoing operations with shift team – gauging their understanding of conditions and facility operations.
- Conducting thorough unit tours during your shift noting equipment status, auditing maintenance activities, non-routine operations and activities in progress, any out of specification parameters or other abnormal conditions, and general cleanliness.
- Leading shift turnovers and ensuring the team is aware of production goals, planned maintenance, non-routine refinery operations and safety system bypasses in place.
- Once per shift, at a minimum, reviewing and initialing unit run sheets with an eye towards detecting trends that may indicate an imminent failure of equipment or abnormality that may in time shorten the useful life of facility equipment.
- Leading Pre-job Huddles and After-Action Reviews for operations and maintenance activities ensuring teams fully understand their responsibilities, are aware of lessons learned and that appropriate measures are in place to mitigate risks.
- Continuously working to improve your level of knowledge of plant operations.
- Managing the team schedule to ensure posts are covered while striving to minimize overtime per contractual guidelines.
- Reviewing open work notifications on SAP for completeness and accuracy.
Enforce Compliance of the facility by:
- Conducting tours of the units along with the shift team Operators to ensure the standards for run sheet recording, procedure use, and cleanliness are maintained.
- Leading by example and holding Operators accountable for procedural, policy, and regulatory compliance.
- Ensuring expectations are clearly communicated and consistently enforced within the shift team.
- Monitoring work as often as possible to ensure it is conducted safely and in accordance with technical and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinating with the RSS to ensure safe and technically sound, short-term temporary operations are properly briefed, communicated, and documented with a temporary MOC along with pre job huddle. This provides shift teams with guidance for safe operation in abnormal operating conditions.
- Ensuring that incidents and near misses are reported to the RSS, area team, shift teams, and safety, and that documentation and evidence collection is done to support subsequent investigation.
- Ensuring that commercial and area team guidance are reviewed and followed.
- Ensuring operating procedures are followed.
- Reviewing scheduled work on the maintenance work schedule, making sure operators are prepared for daily activities (LOTOs, permits, MOCs, JSAs, etc.).
- Conduct periodic LOTO audits.
- Ensuring daily, weekly, monthly, and annual KPIs are completed.
- Following LOTO removal, audit to ensure systems are restored to an operational status prior to startup.
- Ensure SAP notifications are entered for any maintenance items that need addressed.
- Ensure nonconformance notifications are entered for any safety incidents, environmental events or process upsets that require further follow and investigation. Do a thorough initial fact finding with statements, immediate corrective actions and proposed corrective actions.
- Ensuring qualified Operators are in place and fit for duty.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Ohio 3rd Class Stationary Steam Engineers License
- Advanced knowledge of the refinery union contract and sound personnel management skills.
- Experience/knowledge of reforming, hydrocracking, hydro-treating and distillation.
- Good working knowledge of process flow diagrams.
- Proficient with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Strong working knowledge of all applicable industry rules and regulations, including Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).
- Proficient with SAP or other business enterprise software.
- Knowledge and skilled in safety protocols.
- Strong leadership skills with a focus toward continuous improvement.
- Proven ability to work in a team environment dealing with people from various disciplines to achieve goals and to identify and resolve problems.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills to set and exceed established goals, schedules and deadlines.
- The ability to effectively communicate, both in writing and verbally, with other levels of management and with subordinates.

- Bachelor's Degree
- Recent supervisory experience.
