DAY-TO-DAY

This full-time school position with our human services nonprofit works the day shift.

As a Special Education - Secondary Education Specialist in human services, you're responsible for designing and implementing classroom educational programming, including academics, daily living skills, vocational skills, community safety, and engagement to help students become successful adults. You create and deliver daily, weekly, and monthly lessons that align with state curriculum standards and meet minimum requirements for minutes of instruction. Upon request, you provide lessons and units for review and in an accessible format for substitute teachers in case of absence.

Additionally, you complete periodic progress monitoring of individual education plan (IEP) goals as well as non-academic documentation, including communication logs and behavioral tracking. You monitor and report to the administration regarding the work, effort, skills, and implementation of treatment and academic programming by teacher aides and classroom assistants. Throughout the school year, you provide documentation for each student on psychiatric rounding and other treatment meetings. You also complete all required paperwork such as behavior tracking and parent notification forms in a timely manner.

At the end of each month, you submit accurate attendance records as well as ensure monthly reports are submitted to the appropriate parties. You maintain contact with families to provide academic progress updates and share important student accomplishments. As needed, you develop working relationships with our residential and clinical team members, ensuring that students are supervised at all times by a paid employee of our nonprofit. You also participate in meetings, workshops, and professional development or training to continuously enhance your skills and knowledge.

Using an agency vehicle, you sometimes transport students to and from group residences, activities, field trips, medical appointments, and work sites. You monitor the spending allowance for your classroom and provide receipts to the director in a timely manner. When using our financial accounts such as the agency credit card, you ensure it's kept in a safe place. Teaching is what you were meant to do, and you find great fulfillment in knowing that your hard work contributes to the lives of our students in such a big way!

REQUIREMENTS FOR A SPECIAL EDUCATION - SECONDARY EDUCATION SPECIALIST

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • 2+ years of teaching experience
  • Current and valid New York State (NYS) special education teaching certification
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Covid-19 vaccination
