The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco has a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Researcher, Community Development to join our Community Development (CD) team. Community Development supports the SF Fed’s mission for a healthy, inclusive, and sustainable economy. Our team fosters strategic partnerships and conducts innovative research to advance the economic resilience and mobility of the communities we serve.
As Senior Researcher, you will conduct and disseminate practitioner-friendly research on topics relevant to the labor market and supporting a thriving workforce, as well as other topics within our department’s key priority areas that contribute to healthy and resilient communities and an inclusive financial system. Our ideal candidate is a creative and motivated researcher with practical work or lived experience addressing key issues facing low-income communities and communities of color.

Essential Responsibilities:
- Initiate and conduct applied and policy-relevant quantitative research on the labor market and topics related to supporting a thriving workforce, as well as other priority subject areas
- Conduct independent research and provide research support to department efforts
- Build blog posts, summary briefs, videos or other collateral materials to promote research
- Keep a pulse on emerging issues in the CD field
- Establish research partnerships with a diverse set of internal (SF Fed) and external partners, including networks that can help elevate worker voices and perspectives
- Collaborate with CD Outreach staff to source ideas and disseminate research findings across District
- Coordinate and participate in internal and external conferences to disseminate research and ideas
- Build internal forums and opportunities for sharing community development research with SF Fed staff and leadership
- Contribute to Federal Reserve System Community Development initiatives
- Other projects as assigned
Requirements:
- Master's degree or PhD in public policy, urban planning, social work, economics, history, geography, public health, or related subject area
- Typically requires six or more years of confirmed experience in community development, government, finance, research, or related field; with PhD, requires with two or more years of work experience in community development, government, finance, research, or related field
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a wide range of community and economic development issues, such as poverty, racial equity, structural barriers to employment, workforce development, neighborhood and regional planning, healthy communities, community-engaged research, small business, asset building, climate resilience
- Demonstrated experience initiating and conducting independent quantitative and qualitative research projects
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills
- Strong data analysis skills and experience with data analytics software (e.g., Python, SAS, STATA, R), big data, GIS mapping, survey techniques
- Excellent problem solving, critical thinking, writing, and editing skills
- Experience working with a wide range of community development partners, ranging from banks, foundations, government, nonprofits, CDFIs
- Demonstrated public speaking and facilitation skills
- Excellent collaboration and relationship building skills
- Experience with a variety of data sources including Census and BLS
- Comfort working independently with minimal direct supervision
- U.S. Citizenship or a Green Card Holder with the intent to become a U.S. Citizen is required
- Willing and able to travel up to 15%
Base Salary Range: Min: $111,100 Mid: $144,200 Max: $177,400 (Location: San Francisco)
Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
