Tesla is seeking a dynamic Sr. Environmental Engineer, Air Quality to join the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Team who will be responsible for leading Gigafactory Texas’ air quality management program and performing complex technical work in air quality compliance and permitting projects. They will also manage external environmental consultants, serve as the internal environmental technical subject matter expert, and advise and influence internal business partners to achieve environmental performance goals. Reporting to the Gigafactory Texas Environmental Manager, the Environmental Engineer (Air Quality) will be part of the Tesla EHS Team that builds capacity, provides solutions, and drives continuous improvement throughout the Global Tesla Organization.
What You’ll Do- Maintain and update the inventory of air emissions and sources
- Oversee routine air emissions calculations and reporting
- Oversee implementation of processes to assure that Tesla operates in compliance with air emissions permits issued to Gigafactory Texas and all applicable federal, state, and local air quality regulations
- Complete Title V semi-annual and annual compliance reporting
- Manage air emissions source testing and reporting, coordinating with Plant Operations and Process teams
- Assist in planning for changes in physical facilities, reviewing new or modified equipment and new manufacturing programs to meet regulatory and company requirements
- Support Management of Change (MOC) for new and existing projects
- Manage the air permit application and permitting process for new projects, as assigned
- Perform compliance air permit evaluations, and utilize tracking tools to provide recommendations and corrective actions to responsible stakeholders
- Support audits, inspections, and inquiries from regulatory agencies, including U.S.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other state, and local regulatory agencies
- Monitor and analyze the developing trends and changes in regulatory compliance laws, rules and regulations
- Develop, track, and report Environmental Metrics
- Develop and manage Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or Environmental-related discipline; Master’s degree preferred;
- Professional certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) is a plus;
- Minimum 7+ years’ experience with permitting and compliance tasks for a major source facility;
- Strong foundational knowledge of air quality laws (CAA, TCEQ, NEPA, etc.), regulations, and standards;
- Demonstrated experience to understand various chemical and physical manufacturing processes and develop accurate emission inventories for air emissions reports and permit applications;
- Knowledge of federal NESHAP/MACT/NSPS requirements related to automobile manufacturing is a plus;
- Experience in Air permitting and compliance – NSR/PSD/Title V
- Knowledge and experience with dispersion modeling and health impacts evaluation is a plus;
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-faceted projects in a fast-paced environment, where demands and priorities change rapidly;
- Ability to communicate effectively with production employees, engineers, legal counsel, technical specialists, and management, cross functionally, in a multi-disciplinary, global environment;
- Strong understanding of sustainability and environmental topics and fundamentals including sustainable design, planning, policy, waste, greenhouse gases/energy, responsible material sourcing, water, land use change, biodiversity, and EHS certification systems;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills;
- Experience managing regulatory/agency inspections;
- Evidence of exceptional ability.
