Position Title: Sr. Paralegal, Salty Snacks


Position Location: Deerfield, IL


This position can be Remote - Hybrid – 2 times per week potentially in Deerfield, IL


Summary:


The Sr. Paralegal, Salty Snacks role will report directly to the Assistant General Counsel, Salty Snacks and will be a key member of the Hershey Salty Snacks legal team. This is a newly created position primarily designed to provide commercial transaction legal support for Hershey’s Salty Snacks division (SKINNY POP, PIRATE’S BOOTY, DOT’S PRETZELS), with operational and sales locations in Texas, Indiana, Kansas, and North Dakota (collectively approx. $1B). Additionally, the Sr. Paralegal, Salty Snacks role will report indirectly to the Associate General Counsel, Global Employment & Security in support of Hershey Salty Snacks labor and employment matters. Responsibilities will include:

Commercial – Supply Chain/Marketing and Sales


  • Manage contract review/negotiation projects that are large in scope and complexity, often involving diverse areas of the law and many stakeholders.

  • Analyze complex commercial/business concepts and identify relevant legal issues and related, real-world risks; provide prompt, clear and practical legal analysis, advice, and solutions; and generally, assist the business in achieving its goals.


  • Partner with other Legal Dept. members to deliver “one voice to the business” on a wide range of corporate, commercial and operational matters, including intellectual property and advisory support to the Salty Snacks supply chain, procurement, and IS.

  • Utilize high-level communication skills, both oral and written, to effectively communicate with various levels of leadership and staff, across functions and in various settings.


  • Deliver training on legal issues and help facilitate a culture of ethics & compliance.

  • Develop and implement strategies to ensure legally compliant commercial relationships.

  • Manage outside counsel support to ensure effective, business-focused legal advice is provided in a cost-effective manner.

  • Some travel may be required to support local and out-of-state clients.


Labor & Employment

  • Partner with Sr. Director, Labor & Employment, to advise on and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor and employment laws, including those relating to non-discrimination, disabilities, leaves of absence, wage and hour, and restrictive covenants.

  • Partner with HR and/or legal colleagues to assist and/or provide counsel on internal investigations of employment-related and other types of complaints, ensuring that claims are addressed promptly, thoroughly and appropriately.

  • Create and deliver management and employee training programs.

  • Partner with HR on various matters involving employee and labor relations.

  • Assist with responses to subpoenas and similar requests.

  • Assist with investigation and management of employment–related claims and litigation.


Ethics & Compliance and Privacy

  • Partner with Ethics & Compliance to develop and provide Salty Snacks employees with guidance consistent with Code of Conduct and related areas including anti-corruption, conflicts of interest, antitrust, anti-harassment, and other trainings.

  • Partner with Ethics & Compliance and Privacy attorneys to manage risk and implement policies and processes to ensure compliance with federal and state privacy laws.

  • Assisting with creating and revising play books and providing general legal support and guidance to the Salty Snacks Sales Team and Procurement Team.

  • Receiving incoming questions and providing solutions for the Salty Snacks Sales Team and Procurement Team.

  • Performing legal research as needed to support the Salty Snacks business initiatives and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

  • Working with the business unit to support bid and proposal efforts


Dimensions:


Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

  • Experience within a consumer-packaged goods context is preferred

  • Experience supporting food manufacturing operations is a plus

  • Knowledge of methods, practices, procedures and requirements for drafting a variety of legal documents relating to the sale and procurement of goods and services

  • Skills to conduct legal research, analyze issues and prepare/review drafts of legal documents, ensuring that they meet legal requirements and deadlines

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships cross-functionally

  • Independent self-starter with the ability to effectively manage and prioritize a high-volume workload and work well under pressure in a fast-moving environment

  • Exercise excellent judgment and initiative, project management, and problem-solving skills to successfully drive projects to completion

  • Flexibility to respond to multiple and often-changing priorities on a global level

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and follow through

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to handle confidential information and develop trusting relationships, using a high degree of tact, discretion and diplomacy

  • High degree of skill in computer and information technology resources; specifically, but not limited to, Microsoft Office 365, LegalTracker, and Agiloft.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:


Education:


Bachelor’s Degree required; Paralegal Degree or Certification preferred

Experience:


5+ years of experience at law firm or corporation (in-house experience preferred) with:


  • Knowledge and/or relevant experience in managing contracts with large customers in the consumer-packaged goods and food industry

  • Experience drafting and negotiating contracts in procurement and sales, including MSAs, commercial agreements, vendor agreements, NDAs, and other third-party agreements

  • Outstanding time-management and prioritization skills

  • Ability to know when to raise and issue to the team leader or subject matter experts

  • Well versed in methods and techniques of legal research

  • Strong legal analysis skills, including the ability to read, interpret and apply statutory and legal requirements to legal and business matters

  • Problem-solving skills that demonstrate ability to critically evaluate and analyze issues and recommend well thought-out and/or creative solutions

  • Strong writing skills to create work product that is clear, concise, and effective.

  • Experience working with databases (contract lifecycle management, billing, matter management, etc.)

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams)
