The Food Strategy Manager will supervise and support the Food Sourcing Team to ensure continuous planning, implementation, growth and ongoing work of all food sourcing activities including fostering relationships with food donors throughout Second Harvest Food Bank’s 23 parish service territory. Leads the development and implementation of innovative initiatives including the use of technology-based tools, community-oriented food sourcing, and food systems collaborations.

This position requires innovative responses to challenges such as changing food source streams, operational capacity and food distribution models.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Food Strategy Manager is an integral member of the Operations Team and supports the overall mission of Second Harvest through both interdepartmental collaboration and external relationship building. Specifically, the Food Strategy Manager will:

  • Based on organizational needs, Food Strategy Manager determines strategic direction of food sourcing activities including but not limited to- prioritizing source channels, identifying new donors/industries, cultivating specific donations per client needs
  • Provide project management and oversight for yearly department activities including food drive events, cause marketing campaigns, etc. that take place on annual/seasonal basis
  • Implements innovative strategies and programming to address changing food donation source streams with an emphasis on regional food industries and emerging markets
  • Serve as liaison for high priority/industry specific food donors
  • Plan and monitor Food Sourcing Department budget, anticipate annual needs and opportunities for revenue
  • Work with Grants Team to identify funding opportunities and to ensure food sourcing grant requirements and reporting are met
  • Oversee large food orders through government commodities programming, consulting with Operations and Impact team to ensure capacity, distribution considerations, and client needs are met
  • Represent the food bank with appropriate food and business-related organizations and committees, including public speaking opportunities
  • Supervise Food Sourcing Specialists and perform managerial duties

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences (community development, public health, social work) or relevant degree and 2 years of experience in the non-profit sector, food industry or food systems development.

Experience

  • Strong program and personnel management experience including supervisory roles
  • Program development and strategic planning with familiarity with budget management, grant management and evaluation skills

Skills and Capabilities

  • Proven success with interdepartmental collaboration
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to make presentations and develop reports that include technical information
  • Strong interest in community food systems and hunger/poverty issues
  • Proven success in setting expectations and maintaining accountabilities
  • Ability to keep accurate records and to track and analyze data. Experience with inventory fiscal and recordkeeping systems
  • Adept at change management
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office environment (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) and standard office equipment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail, ability to handle multiple interruptions, maintain focus on tasks and produce accurate work
  • Strong problem solving-skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to travel locally throughout 23 parish service areas with some overnight and flight travel throughout the year
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and use of a reliable and registered vehicle
