Job Summary
The Student Assistant will support the Department of Biology as a Research Assistant on the Statesboro Campus beginning Summer 2023.
The Research Assistant will be working with Dr. Checo Colon-Gaud and Dr. Scott Harrison on the population genetics of Amphiuma means. This research focuses primarily on the giant salamander (Amphiuma means) and involves several research areas including 1) the distribution of genetic variation and the dynamics of inbreeding and outbreeding, 2) the genetics of ecological tolerance and limits, and 3) the consequences of heritable traits on metabolic processes.
Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.
Responsibilities
- Design controlled experiments and field studies aimed to characterize biases in gene expression, assess changes in gene expression in response to environmental changes, and characterize genetic variation within and among natural populations of species endemic to the Southeast.
Shift Specifics
- Up to 25 hours per week
- Flexible with schedule of availability
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
- Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Education
- GPA of 3.50 or above and coursework completed including: prior or ongoing coursework in physiology, evolution, ecology, molecular biology, or similar and previous exposure to research in or out of the classroom
Preferred Experience
- Previous exposure to research in or out of the classroom
Proposed Salary
$15.63 per hour
This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.
