This position will be used to fill 1 part-time (20-40 hour per week) student research analyst for the University Innovation Alliance within the Office of Academic Affairs.
The University Innovation Alliance is a consortium of 19 universities from across the country whose mission is to increase the number of undergraduate students, with a direct focus on students from underserved backgrounds, who graduate with a bachelor’s degree. The UIA accomplishes this goal by supporting innovative approaches to student success.
The successful candidate will be working directly with the UIA Fellow to complete an in-depth analysis in service of the Black Student Success Initiative (BSSI) Project. This project is dedicated to better understanding the challenges that Black students face at Oregon State University, and the people, policies, and practices that affect student outcomes such as graduation or attrition. The purpose of this project is to create a robust analysis that will help inform the strategy and direction of Black student support across OSU’s campus.
Position Duties
The successful candidate’s duties will roughly be as follows:
Research Development (35%)
Research Development (35%)
- Compile and organize raw data from multiple different sources
- Identify sources of data that will help create a robust picture. Distinguish between data we currently have and data structures that we still need to build
- Maintain documentation of data requests, project completion data, and project processes to develop an iterative process that can be repeated in the future
Analysis (45%)
- Demonstrate curiosity and generate exploratory questions that will shape analyses
- Perform exploratory analysis to identify trends and patterns that emerge from initial data sources.
- Analyze complex student data (qualitative or quantitative) using appropriate metrics and methodologies.
Communication (15%)
- Collaborate with campus partners to request data and share findings
- Participate in the feedback gathering process with varying campus stakeholders
- Effectively communicate nuanced and specific situations that may be present in the data
Professional Development (5%)
- Work with campus partners to refine analyses and skills
- Engage in skill-building around data analytics, interpersonal communication, policy development, and various other valuable professional skills.

- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
- International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
- Enrolled in a graduate program
- Two years research experience (formally or informally).
- Experience with different stages of data analysis (e.g. gathering, compiling, cleaning, analyzing, summarizing, and sharing.)
- Demonstrated experience analyzing complex datasets and producing comprehensible insights
- Demonstrated experience communicating data-guided insights for various audiences (formally or informally).
- Demonstrated comfort discussing sensitive topics such as race, gender, or other identity-related characteristics with audiences of varying levels of knowledge
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (vlookup, pivot tables, etc..) and other Microsoft Tools

- Experience using R studio to perform statistical analysis and data visualization
- Experience working with datasets with missing data
- Professional/volunteer experience where discussion of sensitive topics was a significant element of the work
- Experience using data to understand or inform larger policy decisions
This position will be required to work between 20-40 hours per week.
