Upstart Crow Youth Theatre (UCYT) is a non-profit, creative hub for kids and teens in the Downtown Eugene Whiteaker neighborhood. We support youth artistically, developmentally, socially, and emotionally in an inclusive environment where they are affirmed for their authentic selves. Our program offers theatre classes, summer camps, and inclusive casting in our fully produced and staged musical theatre productions.

Job Description

As a camp counselor at UCYT, you will collaborate with other counselors, be responsible for camper health and safety, supervise recreational activities, and lead campers in fun activities in a day-camp environment.

Qualifications

A successful candidate will have the following qualities:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the time camp begins (06/19)
  • Have experience working with elementary and/or middle school age youth in a group setting.
  • Background in education or previous work as a camp counselor or instructor desired.
  • Satisfactory criminal history background check determination
  • Love camp and/or theatre!

  • Responsive to supervisor guidance & feedback
  • Possess a good character, flexibility, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and emotional self-regulation.
  • Able to lead an activity, including aspects of time management and creative problem-solving
  • Able to supervise, identify and meet camper needs, while providing a safe, high-quality experience in the daily operation of camp.
  • Able to provide consistent and active supervision, promote group unity and learn individual camper’s needs.
  • Able to take initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Able to lead fun and engaging activities, including games, arts and crafts, explorations, and imagination that fit into each week’s Camp theme.
  • Able to uphold productive working relationships and communication with supervisors, co-workers, subordinates, and the general public.

Practical Skills

  • Able to lift up to 30 pounds
  • Able to spend sustained periods of time outdoors in warm summer weather
  • Able to lead groups of campers to and from the UCYT Building to the park (5-10 minute walk)
  • Able to read, write, and speak the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.

Responsibilities

1. Leading activities, supervising, and generally being the primary adult in charge of groups of 10-20 campers at a time. Groups generally range in age from K-6, with a few outliers groups ranging 6-12.

2. General cleaning/sanitization: UCYT's custodian will be responsible for all major cleaning at after camp hours. Counselors will be expected to tidy their group space at the end of the day, and attend to any other minor clean-up that is needed throughout the day.

3. Effectively and professionally interacting with campers, CIT's, co-workers, and parents. Keeping topics of conversation appropriate for the people within earshot, modeling appropriate adult-student/kid dynamics.

Schedule for camp weeks:
Camp begins Monday July 19th.
The week of July 3rd will be an abbreviated camp week. Wednesday-Friday July 5-7
Last week of camp Aug 28-Sept 1

Monday 8.5 hrs w/30 min lunch 7:30am - 4:30pm
Tuesday 7.5 hrs w/30 min lunch 8:00am - 4:00pm
Wednesday 8 hrs w/30 min lunch 8:00am - 4:30pm
Thursday 7.5 hrs w/30 min lunch 8:00am - 4:00pm
Friday 8.5 hrs w/30 min lunch 8:00am - 5:00pm

Hours for weeks 5 and 6 summer stock (Legally Blonde JR)
Week 5 - 38-40 hours - 7.5 hours daily w/30 min lunch 8:00am - 4:00pm
Week 6 - 40 hours - schedule will flex based on your availability to work Legally Blonde performance weekend (student supervision).
Performances are July 28th 7pm, July 29th 2pm AND 7pm, and July 30th 2pm

Compensation
This position will pay $15-$16 an hour and the number of hours will be 40 per week.
UCYT camp counselors may request up to two weeks unpaid leave, subject to approval. These weeks must be requested before the summer schedule begins.
