The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. HJF is seeking multiple Junior Mentors to provide youth program instructional support and mentoring to program attendees. Serve as a role model, business strong connections and comply and enforce program policies, procedures and safety protocols.


This position will be in support of the Graduate School of Nursing (GSN), located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). We invite applications for the position of Head Mentor for the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers Program. This position is located at USUHS, working with the GSN Assistant Dean for Students. The Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program provides students from under-resourced middle schools with a supportive STEM-enrichment educational experience. Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers is aligned with project-based learnings taken from real world challenges, and invites STEM exploration, career exploration, and personal development. This is a 4-week program scheduled to begin on June 20, 2023 and end on July 14, 2023. Selected candidates will be required to undergo a week-long training starting on June 12, 2023.


Note: This site requires that the incumbent has lived in the US for three out of the past five years.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist Program Director, Program Coordinator and Lead Mentor with resources for campus services.
  • Serve as program participant (attendee) role model by demonstrating enthusiasm, positive attitudes, respectful communication, appropriate attire and appearance and a diligent work ethic. Build strong connections with students. Provide a nurturing and supportive environment for students.
  • Coordinate and facilitate social and curriculum programs as needed. Adhere to curriculum and program structure and learning initiatives.
  • Support other program staff with instructional efforts. Stay alert for any issues including safety concerns and students struggling with content.
  • Proactively intervene and assist students that are having difficulty and that need additional support and guidance.
  • Coordinate and facilitate social and VIL curriculum programs as desired or needed.
  • Complete formal program evaluations.
  • Attend both fall 2023 and spring 2024 academic year recruitment events.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to help program attendees grow in character, experiences and insights
  • Ability to portray enthusiasm while displaying flexibility and remaining calm with youth attendees
  • For STEM programs, working technical knowledge and ability to integrate technology into course deliveryAbility to teach in a multicultural setting

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
Qualifications:

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a two-year. For STEM programs, enrolled in a STEM related field of study.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required
