ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT


Fletcher Miller School is a unique academic environment for students with significant support needs. Fletcher Miller is a public school on Jeffco?s continuum of alternative education placements for special education. All students at Fletcher Miller work toward Extended Evidence Outcomes aligned with the general education curriculum and state standards. We serve SSN students ages 3-21 in preschool, Kindergarten-12th grade, transition services, and the Lighthouse Program. In addition to addressing literacy, communication, math, science and social studies, students experience adaptive physical education, music, art, library and work in the greenhouse. Because of our students? unique and complex significant support needs, intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy is provided during the school day to support access to education. School placement at Fletcher Miller is based on identified student need through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. Students participate in a variety of specially designed, district supported activities including adaptive physical education, boy and girl scouts, art shows, bike day, and PBIS. Our campus staff work in multi-disciplinary teams which include special education teachers, para educators, nurses, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, mental health provider and other itinerant special education staff to address the ?whole child?. To achieve this, we also partner with many community organizations including neighborhood schools, universities and colleges, and community based organizations.

ABOUT THE JOB


The Lighthouse Program at Fletcher Miller School serves 6th grade through transition age students who have significant support needs and exhibit aggressive and/or self-injurious behaviors. This position involves direct instruction focusing on student communication, self-regulation skills, behavioral interventions, and academics skills. This position will work closely with another special education teacher serving the Lighthouse program and will require collaboration with other building and district special education staff members. Additionally, this position requires the ability to work collaboratively with others, develop and implement individualized instruction, and supervise para educators.

**Annual salary noted above is based on an 8 hour day and full days worked calendar. Any position that is less than a full FTE/8 hours per day or late start will be prorated accordingly.

RESPONSIBILITIES


SUMMARY Develop, implement, and support individualized practices for achieving learning outcomes for students with significant communication, cognitive, and/or social/behavioral needs, based on the requirements of IDEIA. Utilize evidence-based best practice and rely on frequent progress monitoring for programming adjustments. Take a leadership role in collaboratively problem solving interventions for students. An essential part of this position is to effectively organize and coordinate the responsibilities of multiple adults in the educational environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Design and implement specialized instruction.

Work collaboratively to plan and modify curriculum, team teach with general educators and to communicate the abilities and needs of special education students.

Conduct IEP and referral meetings, conferences, develop a multidisciplinary approach to the educational enhancement of the student.

Maintain on-going communication with regular educators, school staff, students and parents.

Create a safe supportive and understanding environment for disabled students.

Complies with Exceptional Student Services and district policies and procedures (e.g., Medicaid billing, accident reporting).

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Hold valid Colorado teaching license with Special Education Generalist endorsement

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Background in working with students with toilet training, and in working with students in wheelchairs, students with seizure disorders, and other physical disabilities. Training emphasis in LD/PC preferred.

DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by administration or self-directed. This position requires judgment to determine an appropriate course of action for a problem. Errors in decision making could adversely impact care or safety of students. Decision making requires collaboration with other teachers, school nurses and school administrators. Work is guided by Health Action Plan/Medical Protocol, Behavior Management Plan, District policies, school procedures and common sense.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross training in student electronic augmentative/ assistive technology and using computers with students.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHER: Low exposure to self for bruises and cuts due to students/wheelchairs and other equipment. Gloves are provided to prevent exposure to bodily fluids.
