Responsibilities
As a Claims Team Lead, we'll look to you to inspire and develop team of Workers Comp Claims Adjusters. You will be responsible for the administrative and technical supervision of a team of workers’ compensation claims representatives focused on California, Nevada and Arizona state claims. You'll develop staff training and performance management while also monitoring claim handling activities and providing direction and feedback to ensure quality outcomes.

This role would ideally be located in our Manassas, VA office where we have a hybrid work schedule of 3 days in office and 2 days are work from home. However, we'd be open to considering a remote colleague for this role.

We'll count on you to:

  • Supervise all technical aspects of claims including coverage investigation, disability benefits management, medical management, file management, litigation management, subrogation, reserving and settlement.
  • Provide team with technical training and claims handling guidance and direction
  • Review reserve and settlement amounts over the Claims Representative authority level for approval
  • Ensure claims are clearly and adequately documented, and ensures claims data is captured and coded correctly within the claims management software system
  • Provide team support, leadership and motivation to promote a high level of performance
  • Establish team performance goals and objectives in alignment with business plans
  • Perform claims quality reviews in compliance with audit requirements and quality standards
  • Identify and alert senior management to claims trends or issues
  • Resolve escalated policyholder and claimant issues related to specific claims
  • Conduct regular coaching and performance review discussions, establish performance and career development plans in collaboration with team members
  • Assure claims representatives are properly licensed or certified in assigned jurisdictions

Qualifications

What you need to have:

  • Bachelors’ degree or equivalent insurance industry work experience
  • Minimum 3 years of experience (4 – 5 years preferred) handling workers’ compensation claims in multiple jurisdictions
  • Ability to travel to travel nationally to attend hearings, conferences and trainings (less than 10% of time)
  • Ability to effectively manage and develop talent
  • Ability to implement policies, procedures and controls to measure and improve service and financial performance
  • Ability to work independently and strategically problem solve
  • Ability to diplomatically manage conflict, exercise discretion and integrity in dealing with highly confidential and sensitive information
  • Ability to develop relationships within the organization and work effectively across departments
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • COVID-19* vaccine required unless prohibited by law

  • Supervisory experience preferred but not required
  • AIC, ARM, CCP, or CPCU insurance designation preferred
  • Exceptional leadership and motivational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
