Nature of Work

The Tourism and Special Events Coordinator will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing a variety of events and programs that promote Carbondale as a premier destination for tourists and visitors. This includes coordinating logistics, managing budgets, and working closely with community partners to ensure the successful execution of events, including downtown entertainment.

This position will also be responsible for attracting new tourism opportunities, including recruiting sports tournaments to the Carbondale Super Block. The Tourism and Events Coordinator will work with the Public Relations Officer to develop marketing strategies to promote the city's unique culture and attractions. Overall, the role requires a creative, organized, and community-minded individual with a passion for showcasing the best of what Carbondale has to offer.

This is a full-time position working a minimum 40 hours per week; nights, weekends and some holidays, and must attend occasional City Council meetings.


Essential Duties

1. Coordinate the planning, operational logistics, and execution for special events festivals, concerts, and sports tournaments targeting regional visitors and the local community.

2. Act as City liaison with the certified Convention and Visitors Bureau to develop tourism marketing, including online campaigns and the creation and distribution of print materials promoting Carbondale.

3. Serve as contact person for all tourism inquiries via phone, website, social media and email. Investigate and respond to requests for tourism and special event services.

4. Assists with website development and content management, creating fresh, relevant content as needed for the City’s website and social media.

5. Attend meetings, seminars, conventions, and workshops to further knowledge, and stay informed of the changes in the tourism industry.

6. Utilize graphic design skills to produce promotional materials such as tourism brochures, print advertising, and informational content to market Carbondale, though various media channels like newspapers, magazines, radio, television, websites, and social media.

7. Work with the Chamber of Commerce, Carbondale Main Street and other community agencies to develop strategic partnerships on tourism/promotions initiatives.

8. Set program goals and objectives which meet the tourism needs of the community of Carbondale.

9. Physical set up of programs or events. This may include the lifting and moving of tables and chairs, speakers and pop up tents as well as the distribution of supplies to instructors and program participants

Other Duties: Perform other duties and assignments related to tourism as required to carry out the mission of the City of Carbondale.



Work Environment and Physical Demands

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily indoors in an office setting, but may frequently require the physical set up of programs and events including the lifting and moving of tables and chairs, speakers and pop up tents.

Physical Demands: Work in an office and outdoors which requires frequent physical effort, such as sitting, standing, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, crouching, squatting, kneeling, and occasional lifting and carrying of moderately heavy objects between 15-49 pounds.




Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism, Hospitality Management, Marketing, Recreation, Leisure Studies, or related field. Must have at least three years of responsible and progressive experience in Tourism and/or Marketing, preferably in a supervisory capacity, and be confident in their graphic design capabilities. Must have a thorough knowledge of the theory and philosophy of Tourism, Marketing and/or Recreation and the ability to operationalize to others. Must possess initiative, persistence, and creativity. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in planning, organizing, and supervising recreation functions in programming, personnel, administration, public relations, budgeting, financial management, and grant writing. Demonstrated track record of exceptional customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible leadership. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass police background check and drug screening. Fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
