Job Description
The
City of Chesapeake Public Works Department is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of
Engineer I to join our Traffic Engineering Team
. The Traffic Engineering Division designs traffic signals and control devices; maintains a computerized traffic control system; studies traffic patterns and provides site impact analysis; regulates speed limits; investigates neighborhood traffic concerns; oversees work zone traffic control; and reviews subdivision and construction plans. Traffic Engineering is responsible for the planning and design of a safe and efficient roadway network in Chesapeake.
This position will perform various tasks and duties integral to Traffic Engineering. Are you the analytical type? Do you like solving problems? Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Responds to traffic engineering-related inquiries and concerns from staff, the general public, contractors, and other organizational agencies, via phone, email, or in person as needed.
- Prepares, assists, evaluates, and maintains related traffic engineering data, reports, and other information such as traffic counts, speed studies, work orders, etc.; reviews site plans, permit applications, traffic control plans, traffic impact studies, and other traffic engineering related documents.
- Attends staff meetings, trainings and classes, and public meetings, either in person or online.
- Makes site visits when needed.
This position is supervised by the City Traffic Engineer.

REQUIREMENT
: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : None required with possession of a related bachelor’s degree. Without a degree, two years of experience in addition to the degree equivalency are required.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Depending on position, State and/or City certification(s) may be required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
