POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, the Transit Police Sergeant directs Transit Police Officers assigned to Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT), M1 Rail (Q-LINE), The People Mover (DPM) and multiple transit centers.

Transit Police Sergeants are responsible for balancing leave days, performance evaluations, training, and counseling officers. They are familiar with the various transit systems safety and emergency procedures and maintain a close working relationship with The People Mover Control Center.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Maintains Transit Police operations including DDOT, Q-LINE and DPM radio system, respond to inquiries for assistance.
• Directs and make daily assignments to Transit Police Officers assigned to shift.
• Inspects all officers at the beginning of shift to assure they are fit for duty, in proper attire and fully equipment.
• Reviews daily schedule, scheduled and unscheduled absences to determine proper staffing coverage.
• Enforces the laws of the State of Michigan and ordinances of the City of Detroit.
• Maintains liaison with Detroit Police Department, area courts, when required, and surrounding area law enforcement agencies.
• Appears in court and give evidence as required.
• Oversees proper care and use of equipment (i.e. radios, weapons, vehicles, computers, etc.).
• Responsible for incorporating safety into all aspects of job functions.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of safety and security methods and techniques
• Knowledge of City, County and State ordinances, laws, rules and regulations
• Ability to instruct, counsel, supervise, evaluate officers; apply rules and or discipline Transit Officers, regulations and orders.
• Ability to maintain and satisfactorily use assigned weapons.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• High school diploma
• MCOLES licensed.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in law enforcement with any licensed law enforcement agency
• Three (3) years of experience in the position of a Sergeant or higher required.
• Law enforcement experience within public transportation and/or passenger service preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continuously standing, carrying approximately 20 each pound on your person, stooping, crawling, walking, use of keyboard with repetitive hand motion, able to lift of up to 120lb, occasional sitting, kneeling, reaching/working overhead, and climbing. Required to use both hands to perform all duties listed above.

Must be eligible to apply, receive and maintain a Concealed Weapons Permit (CPL).

BENEFITS:

Salary: $71,300-74,200, paid furlough, vested pension in 5 years, medical, dental, vision, Health Savings Account, 457 deferred compensation program.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to work various shifts (days, afternoons, and midnights), holidays and occasional overtime. Must possess a valid driver's license; must pass a pre-employment physical examination, DOT drug test, and meet specific and related standards required by the State of Michigan.
