Reports To: Chief Advancement Officer

Job Summary: The UCS Iowa National Guard (IANG) Counselor provides the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) program to the Iowa National Guard (IANG). They perform yearly screenings, brief interventions, brief treatment, and referrals to services as deemed appropriate.

As part of UCS Healthcare, team members will follow all laws and regulations, including those at the Federal, State, and Local level. They will also adhere to all UCS policies and procedures, including patient confidentiality, HIPAA/ 42CFR part 2, and all CARF requirements. All team members will operate in alignment with UCS Healthcare's core values, work effectively in a team environment, provide or support patient-centered services, and strive to assist UCS Healthcare in delivering the highest level of care.

Essential Functions (85%):

  • Conduct one on one sessions with troops with substance use disorder (SUD) related issues in an educational setting
  • Screen Troops with identified SUD-related issues for the appropriate level of intervention as requested by IANG
  • Keep up-to-date clinical records for interactions with clients in a timely manner.
  • Conduct outreach to outlying armories as requested by IANG
  • Consult with IANG units and organizations on cases that involve substances and be able to articulate best practices for intervening successfully
  • Travel throughout the state of Iowa to various national guard barracks and locations is required
  • Attend required meetings and workgroups as assigned by the IANG
  • Attend required drill weekends with the IANG for SBIRT screening of troops. (12 Weekends a year)
  • Facilitate Resident Brief Treatment Weekends for troops in the IANG seeking help for substance issues. (6 Weekends a year)
  • Facilitate Whole Health Action Management (WHAM) group training for members of the IANG as requested (2-3 times/year)
  • Regular attendance is required
  • Additional duties as assigned

Other Functions: (15%)

  • Coordinate delivery of treatment modalities
  • Collaborate treatment functions with outside agencies
  • Apprise supervisor of problems encountered in caseloads
  • Attend approved conferences and meetings to secure credentials
  • Implement evidenced-based curriculums identified as appropriate by management
  • Interpret referral paperwork to determine an appropriate level of care
  • Engage in a fast pace, problem-solving workflow

Minimum Knowledge, Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Associate's Degree
  • Able to obtain Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) certification in one year after hire
  • Travel throughout the state of Iowa to various national guard barracks and locations is required

Preferred Knowledge, Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or temporary (t)CADC
  • 2 years experience in a related field such as Behavioral Health
  • Bachelor's Degree

Physical Requirements:

  • Accessible by phone or email on a continuous basis during working hours.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to be mobile up to ¼ mile a day to get clients to and from the lobby and complete other tasks around the office
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • A valid driver's license is required (an Iowa driver's license is required within 30 days of hire), and liability insurance or an equivalent means of personal transportation and coverage as travel within the state of Iowa may be necessary.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Daily schedule may vary based on client needs, IANG needs, team member needs, or job duties demand.
