Objective:
Responsible for outstanding daily medical care to all shelter (both in shelter and in foster care) animals and client animals seen through clinic services.

Essential Functions
Shelter:

  • Responsible for daily medical care of shelter animals including daily health checks
  • Administer immunizations, prescribed medicines, deworming, and flea and tick treatments
  • Responsible for provision of food, water, kennel cleaning, and walking of animals in medical side
  • Perform animal bathing, grooming, and nail trimming as needed
  • Explain concept of prepubescent sterilization, prerelease sterilization and humane euthanasia
  • Assists in performance of euthanasia when necessary
  • Provide support to adopters and foster volunteers regarding medical questions or care
  • Input data for animal medical records, treatments, and medicines for all shelter animals
  • Notate animal behavior during medical assessment and report issues to appropriate staff
  • Notify shelter veterinarian in emergent medical situations or deterioration of medical conditions
  • Follow established disease control protocols to clean and disinfect kennels, cages, and general medical areas daily

Surgery:

  • Cleaning instruments and wrapping packs
  • Handle and restrain animals properly and safely during vaccine clinics, surgery prep and wellness exams
  • Monitoring animals recovering from anesthesia
  • Keeps animal cages clean and sanitized; cleans and maintains clinic facilities and equipment
  • Assists in pre surgical shave and prep of animal
  • Maintains proper animal identification
  • Participates in disposal of animals post euthanasia if required
  • Meets and talks with clients during admission, recheck exams, vaccination clinics, and surgical release, giving accurate and understandable instructions for post-surgical care and treatments
  • Assists the veterinarian, veterinarian technicians when needed
  • Performs post-surgical duties and checks to ensure proper recovery of the animal
  • Stocks clinic supplies and performs minor maintenance tasks on all surgical equipment and refers any problems appropriately
  • Maintains all safety standards at all times
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Front Desk:

  • Assist with the flow of incoming animals during pre surgical drop off, vaccine clinics and wellness exams throughout designated areas and take the animal weight as needed
  • Provide information on flea/tick treatment, spay/neuter surgery, routine testing and test results, clinic practices, or general questions on various aspects of animal care
  • Relay important follow up care to discharged patients as requested by the veterinarian tech staff
  • Stock, clean and organize lobby area of the clinic and reception area and exam rooms
  • Obtain patient history at beginning of wellness exams to communicate with veterinarian or vet tech
  • Checking in supply orders and restocking as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with supervisors, colleagues, volunteers (both in shelter volunteers and foster parents). Is able to effectively communicate in emergent situations.

Has daily contact with adopters, clients, co-workers, supervisors and volunteers. Is able to respond promptly and courteously to customer needs. Responds to request for service or assistance from supervisors, co-workers and volunteers. Displays empathy and understanding when needed.

Attendance and Dependability:
Must be depended on to report to work at the scheduled time and is seldom absent from work and can be depended upon to complete work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner and is conscientious about assignments.

Problem Solving:
Is able to identify potential problems and in a timely manner is able to identify a solution or person to provide the solution. Must work well in a group or individual problem solving situations. Displays original thinking and creativity.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years’ experience as veterinary technician, including surgical technician experience
  • Working knowledge of computer systems and veterinary software

Physical Factors

  • Work performed in animal clinic, high exposure to animals
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted, and over 50 lbs. with assistance
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, high noise levels, wet surfaces, hazardous chemicals, and sharp objects
  • Long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and working outdoors in differing climate may be required
