Description of Work Unit
Our mission is to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community…every day. This work unit exists to anesthetize animals for general maintenance (dental work, cast application, etc.); diagnostic tests (physical exams, endoscopic exams, etc.); and for routine and emergency surgeries. The department also instructs veterinary students, visiting veterinarians and technicians on the principles and practice of veterinary anesthesia by allowing students to anesthetize clinical animals, and guiding the students through pre-anesthetic patient evaluation, the choice of anesthetic agents, and the process of monitoring the anesthetized patient. This position has a flexible daytime schedule and is cross trained in all areas of the Anesthesia service (i.e., large and small animal and research and Continuing Education).

Position Summary
This position provides anesthesia for clinical cases and instructs junior and senior veterinary students as they apply the principles learned in lecture to a clinical setting. The technician position also facilitates the function of the anesthesia service by organizing and controlling the daily surgery schedule, repairing and replacing equipment, stocking, and cleaning the area. This position has a flexible daytime schedule and is cross trained in all areas of the Anesthesia service (i.e., large and small animal and research and Continuing Education).

Minimum Qualifications
To qualify for this position:
  • An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology
  • Three years of experience in primary anesthesia, working in a veterinary teaching hospital
  • This position is a promotional opportunity within the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Applicants must be current CSU VTH employees to be considered

  • Decision maker in emergency situations
  • Provides back-up for other staff members and acts as consult about anesthesia cases/management.
  • Senior case management technician (“go-to” person for critical cases, emergencies, complex/involved anesthesia procedures after hours). Specialized anesthesia knowledge required for critical emergency cases such as GDV, hemo abdomen, colic’s, neurologic emergencies, and zoo medicine emergencies
  • Evaluates patients (small, large, and exotic animals) and completes a safe anesthetic plan based on physical, objective, subjective, and history.
  • Pre-medicates, induces, and maintains general anesthesia whenever necessary.
  • Strives to provide state of the art patient management throughout the perioperative phases.
  • Interacts with clinicians and technicians throughout the hospital to coordinate and control the daily surgery schedule.
  • Conducts patient handling and restraint. This includes small, large, and exotic animals.
  • Proper restraint facilitates I.V. catheter placement, pre-anesthetic evaluation/monitor placement, and recovery associated with anesthesia.
  • Provides approved and safely handling of controlled substances (i.e., morphine, ketamine, etc.). Complies with DEA laws and appropriate documentation of controlled substances on a daily basis.

  • Instructs Junior & Senior PVM students, interns, and residents by guiding their management of pre-op, intra-op, and post-operative complications (i.e., organ failure, blood loss, hypotension, arrhythmias, respiratory compromise, and pain management).
  • Responds to anesthetic emergencies by evaluating patient parameters and initiating appropriate lifesaving treatments (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, inotropes, and defibrillation).
  • Supports Jr. & Sr PVM students, interns, and residents by guiding their selection and application of anesthetic agents in clinical patients, based on assessment of patient status through evaluation of lab work, radiographs, and direct exam.
  • Initiates supportive teaching methods to enhance students’ self-esteem.
