About the Role
You will organize and oversee daily operations of the group. The VP will ensure our business is well-coordinated, efficient, profitable and productive by managing its procedures and talent within the team. Lead and direct production and facilities operations for domestic Dow Jones printing operations and contract printers through plant or designated production executives and national staff to meet departmental and your department strategic goals, the primary goal of producing a print product of the highest reproduction quality and freshest content that is reliably delivered to customers, in a cost-effective manner. You will report to the SVP & General Manager, Print Group and be based in our Princeton, NJ office.
You Will:
- Contribute to team financial and operating goals by ensuring that each plant employs and maintains effective processes, staff skills, leadership and spending plans.
- Partner with colleagues across different departments on Print Group's strategic and operational plans.
- Communicate the goals and objectives of the department to the staff and production managers and contract printers to allow them to operate printing plants in an organized manner that meets customer expectations in both print operations and transportation coordination.
- Lead the team in planning and monitoring financial controls for the printing plant operation. Work with the business operations and finance teams on monthly budget reviews and forecasts.
- Develop, implement and control operating and capital spending across all printing plants in a manner that supports the achievement of the Wall Street Journal Group, Barron's and the production department's strategic objectives.
- Develop, evaluate, approve, and monitor the department's capital spending on required capital projects, operating improvements, compensation increases and staffing modifications.
- Develop and maintain an effective national and plant management team through recruiting, training, performance management and clearly defined expectations. Ensure performance standards are met and support staff development by providing skill and knowledge enhancement through workshops and active assignments. Actively support and promote the development of a diverse workforce.
- Support implementation of the continuous improvement projects and direction within the production department and contract printers to ensure success of the program by providing consistent and repeatable product and delivery quality that exceeds customer expectations through the usage of standard and cost-effective means and materials.
- Work with human resources to ensure that regular visits to each printing plant are made to conduct a business review of operating, capital, environmental/safety and staff development projects, discussing expectations, encouraging teamwork, plus listening and responding to employee concerns.
- Participate in planning and implementing national labor negotiation strategy for union plants. Coordinate production department efforts with other Dow Jones departments that are involved in selling, designing, assembling, manufacturing, and delivering Dow Jones print pubs to meet customers' expectations. Support and encourage team-work at the plant and regional levels among News, Circulation, Technology and Advertising to achieve these goals.
- Support environmental and safety regulatory compliance initiatives.
- Handle all other roles and responsibilities as necessary to meet the company objectives.
You Have:
- Managed relationships with internal and external partners.
- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- 15 years of experience managing in a team-based multi-site production environment, with emphasis on strategic and tactical newspaper production issues.
- Customer and bottom line-driven traits, with a record of cost-efficient results.
- The ability to travel and work in an organized manner.
- Proficiency in the use of business PC applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.)
- Technical knowledge of offset printing and packaging, techniques, equipment and processes.
