Overview:
In support of the 81st Training Wing and 403rd Wing at Keesler AFB Ms, performs typical weather station operations including but not limited to taking/recording weather observations, issuing Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAF), preparing and briefing DD Form 175-1, Mission Execution Forecast (MEF), and monitoring weather conditions and issuing weather watches, warnings and advisories as required.
Responsibilities:
  • Produces and disseminates all required surface weather observations to local customers, inputs them into the shared information database, and records them on applicable forms.
  • Maintains and files weather data to include all required climatological records.
  • Issues weather watches, warnings, and advisories to customers and coordinates with the 26th Operational Weather Squadron [OWS] Characterization Unit [CU] as required.
  • Responds to and supports all Pilot-to-Metro-Service [PMSV] calls.
  • Transmits all required Pilot Reports [PIREPS], Air Reports [AIREPS], and other pilot obtained weather data collected via Pilot to Metro Sevice [PMSV] or other means (tower, debriefs, etc.) to local customers and inputs them into the shared database.
  • Produces flight weather briefings and Mission Execution Forecasts [MEFs] as well as mission planning support to all local flying units and transient air crews using all available weather products and data.
  • Debriefs aircrews after completion of missions, including all aspects of the weather provided, accuracy of weather forecast and actual weather conditions.
  • Provides the 81st TRW Commander with pertinent weather information, to include stand-up briefings and Installation Command and Control Center briefing as required.
  • Provides or arranges for all routine weather support requests as required by all agencies and units on base to include Concept Weather Briefings for depolyments.
  • Participates in a Cooperative Weather Watch [CWW] with the local air traffic control agency, the 26th OWS/CU, and other weather agencies.
  • Operates meteorological equipment including but not limited to the FMQ-19 AOS, the Joint Environmental Toolkit (JET), The Gibson/Ridge Doppler Radar program, and all applicable backup equipment.
  • Prepares base hurricane bulletins using the Hurrtrack software and disseminates it to various wing agencies on base.
  • Position is classified as mission essential and requires employee to shelter at work site and respond to disasters and other contingency operations.
  • Conducts all operations in accordance with the ITT ASI (ASI) Station Operations Manual and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Complies with all ASI Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS), and Quality Assurance (QA), requirements and goals.
  • Provides documentation to the divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  • Implements and maintains a safe workplace program, ensuring safety is the highest priority.
  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Interacts professionally with the NSF OPP (OPP), military, and other agency officials.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Education/Certifications: Three years related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Operational experience using the Gibson/Ridge Doppler Radar program.
    • Must have completed a formal DoD training program for forecasting and observing.
    • Position requires selected applicant be able to obtain/maintain Secret security clearance.
  • Experience:
    • 3 years of training/experience as a meteorologist, meteorologist technician or weather observer making meteorological observations
    • Observer certified with at least three years supporting Military and Homeland Security operations to include METAR surface weather observations.
    • Forecaster certified with at least three years supporting Military and Homeland Security operations to include issuing aviation forecasts and providing flight weather briefings
    • Operational experience using the Gibson/Ridge Doppler Radar program
  • Skills:
    • Must have excellent communication and people skills.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in issuing mission execution forecasts, weather watches/warnings, and weather advisories.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in answering PMSV calls and disseminating PIREPs.
    • Must have computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office and demonstrate a working knowledge of the Joint Environmental Tool kit [JET].
