BWXT is currently seeking a Weld Instructor to join its growing team in Mount Vernon, IN!
The weld instructor position will include direct oversight and training of fabricators, with varying degrees of welding experience, preparing to test to commercial and military codes and standards.
This position is expected to work a base schedule of 4:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on M-Th (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). This schedule is tentative and could change, based on business needs and could include additional work days or overtime.
This position could also perform welding instruction in support of community technical training programs and the successful candidate will need to possess a willingness, and ability, to instruct high-school age students for a portion of the typical work day.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Must be able to demonstrate and instruct proper use of welding equipment by instructing welding employees on the basic operation and adjustments of welding machines and various tools welders use. Must be proficient in the instruction of technique, and best practices, in all positions and topics including: rod angle, arc length, travel speed, etc.
- Train employees on different weld processes to include SMAW (Stick), TIG, Flux Core, MIG spray, etc. on steel and nickel-based alloys.
- Train employees on the use of various metal cutting/removal/blending tools and techniques, use of grinders, acetylene torch, arc gouging, etc.
- Knowledgeable of welding symbols and welding definitions, welding terminology, and understanding of drawings and technical sketches.
- Provide clear and detailed instructions on BWXT standards and set challenging, but achievable, goals for welders in training/qualification.
- Provide weekly reports on employees’ progress to operations management.
- Provide one-on-one and group trainings with employees to visually inspect welds and teach them what a quality weld visually should look like and instill requirements of BWXT welding and inspection procedures.
- Provide students with mark ups, and explanations of cause for defects found on their welds.
- Create weekly training schedules specific to employees needs to improve welding skills.
- Evaluating the performance of welding employees to verify their training and qualification in accordance with the applicable welding procedures.
- Keep detail records of all training per employee
- Maintain and enforce impeccable housekeeping in classrooms and weld booths.
- Follow and enforce all company policies including safety rules, work habits, and quality standards.
- Provide necessary manufacturing support as required.
- Ability to achieve BWXT Weld Inspection Certification (WQI).
- Responsible for maintaining weld material inventory.
- Proactively communicate with others in the welding organization (Weld Engineers, Weld Techs, Front-Line Managers, etc.) on any concerns with weld processes, materials, consumables, equipment minor repair and/or replacements, and calibration of equipment.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Must be able to pass and maintain active commercial and NAVSEA certifications
- Must have a detailed knowledge of manufacturing processes including welding, fitting, and processing.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office tools and internet-based applications
- Possesses effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Desired minimum of 3 years of experience as a weld instructor.
- Desired minimum of an associate’s degree in welding-related field, or equivalent trade certification
- Desired minimum of 10 years of experience as a welder
- Desired manual and automatic/semi-automatic welding experience
- Desired CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) AWS certification for external candidates
