Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in education, child development, psychology or related discipline.
Basic knowledge of child development is required.
Minimum of one year work experience with special needs children (i.e. school, camp, counselor, child care work, college practicum experiences, etc).
The classroom aide must have the ability to relate positively and sensitively to Lourie Center School (LCS) Children. The aide must be able to interact positively with other LCS team members.
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the classroom teacher with oversight by the Leadership Team, the aide helps their assigned child to decrease and eventually avoid behaviors which may result in self-injury or injury to others. The aide also helps the child increase his/her availability for learning in both one-to-one and group instruction.
1. Under the supervision of the classroom teacher, provides instructional support to the assigned child with the goal of increasing the child's level of independence.
2. Assists the teacher in the development and preparation of materials to be used with this child.
3. Assists the child during group activities.
4. Assists the teacher and the interdisciplinary team in the formulation and implementation of therapeutic and behavior management strategies for this child in the program.
5. Assist the teacher in development of Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Plan for assigned child.
6. If requested, accompanies, participates, or observes the child in therapy sessions and, within the classroom, facilitates the child’s progress toward academic and social-emotional goals.
7. Records observational data on student behavior at the pre-designated intervals in collaboration with teacher and interdisciplinary team.
8. Available to physically restrain the child in instances of imminent danger to self or others.
9. Reads the child’s reports and Individualized Education Program (IEP).
10. Participates in the school’s interdisciplinary team meetings, workshops, and other selected Lourie Center staff meetings.
11. Continues professional education in special education or a related discipline by attending internal or external workshops, conferences, and/or coursework.
12. Performs other duties as assigned by the teacher, especially when the designated child is absent or progressing enough that constant physical guidance or proximity is no longer necessary. When the teacher is absent, the aide’s specific role and tasks are designated by the teacher in advance and performed in collaboration with the Teacher Assistant for the day.

- Flexibility in order to meet student and classroom operating needs.
- Able to able to physically perform Crisis Prevention Intervention to maintain safety and welfare of children and staff.
- Ability to maintain self-control in volatile/hostile situations such as being verbally and/or physically confronted by a student or family member.
- Able to set therapeutic limits and maintain therapeutic distance with students.
- Able to maintain therapeutic boundaries with children and team members.
