Position Summary

  • Prepare two nutritious daily meals for the residents at the Booth Senior Bridge Home and Corps activities as needed.
  • Follow the preset mealtimes for the Booth Senior Bridge Home and assist in creating weekly menus for the program.
  • If needed, prepare modified meals for clients that have a special dietary need due to medical necessity or religious beliefs.
  • Responsible for preparing, serving, storing and handling food in accordance with Department of Public Health standards.
  • Requisition food supplies based on daily/weekly menu plans as required and maintain proper inventory food portion to support budget cost meal preparation.
  • Must maintain flexibility in working varying shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays and special events.
  • Keep all food preparation areas and equipment clean and sanitary at all times, including proper cleaning of dishes, pots, pans, equipment, kitchen work areas, and food storage areas.
  • Responsible for effective food preparation and portioning for cost control.
  • Perform pre-safety checks and routine inspections of food equipment, report major repairs or services needed and all emergencies, accidents or equipment breakdown immediately to Corps Officers.
  • Maintain sinks, floors drains and storage areas clean and orderly.
  • Organize and rotate storage, using F.I.F.O. method.
  • Assist as needed with dropping off meals to Booth Senior Bridge Home utilizing Salvation Army vehicle.
  • Facilitate cooking classes for Booth Senior Bridge program participants to improve independent living skills.
  • Maintain good working relations with all Salvation Army employees, representatives, volunteers and visitors from other agencies.
  • Participate in ongoing trainings relevant to food handling and supportive services for individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorders or other relevant training to Booth Senior Bridge Home and/or Corps Programs.
  • Complete all other tasks as assigned by Corps Officers.

Working Conditions

Office/field environments; travel from site to site; exposure to computer screens and inclement weather

conditions; may work or inspect in confined spaces; public contact. Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

This Position requires employee to be Vaccinated from COVID-19 or have a religious or medical approved exemption.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Successful completion of background screening.
  • Employment eligibility verification.
  • One-year cooking in an institutional or residential setting or equivalent experience.
  • A high School diploma or GED accepted.
  • Must possess a valid Class C California Driver’s License and clean MVR.
  • Read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Maintain valid CA Food Handler Certification.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Must be culturally sensitive and non-judgmental.
  • Knowledge and sensitivity regarding issues of homelessness, mental health and chronic illness.
  • Ability to complete required Salvation Army trainings (Driver Safety, Protect the Mission Training (PTM), Preventing Sexual Harassment, etc.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with the team.
  • Flexible work schedule to include some evenings and/or weekends as needed.
