As a Substitute Teacher, it is your responsibility to provide instruction, foster a restorative justice approach to classroom management, and encourage student progress. Ensuring student safety is one of your top priorities.

Upon successful performance and qualifications, substitutes have the opportunity to be considered for full-time teaching or teacher-fellow positions.


Your Responsibilities

  • Arrives and leaves on time
  • Attend any required training for Compass Rose Substitute Teachers
  • Adhere to the curriculum and lesson plans assigned by the classroom teacher
  • Follow procedures and achieve lesson goals
  • Assign and explain homework
  • Oversee students outside of the classroom including in the hallways and cafeteria and for morning or after-school duty
  • Comply with all school regulations and policies at all times
  • Take attendance and document daily notes
  • Ensure classroom and work are kept clean and orderly
  • Oversee the normal classroom rhythms and activities
  • Compile a report for the teacher upon their return
  • Receive feedback from school leaders or other teachers on the campus to help provide the safest and most productive environment for students
  • Follows professional practices and regulations consistent with Compass Rose values, practices, and policies in working with students, students’ records, parents, and colleagues
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains reasonable rules of conduct that encourage self-discipline and responsibility.
  • Communicates effectively with parents when needed


Special Education PAICE Setting

Some of our substitute teaching positions are needed in our Special Education PAICE classrooms. PAICE stands for Practicing Academics, Independence, and Community Exploration. The Compass Rose PAICE program is a specialized program that assists students in developing functional academic skills, communication, self-help, physical, and functional living skills in order to attain maximum independence which involves students directly and actively in the learning process.

Depending on the student’s individual education plans, your responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Work with students to master specified IEP goals
  • Review student work and document progress data
  • Provide daily intervention for a small group of students
  • Provide individual instruction/tutoring both inside and outside of the classroom setting
  • Assist Special Education teacher with English, Life Skills, Social Skills, and Math classes taught/delivered in a self-contained classroom
  • Monitor students during recess or lunch
  • Provide assistance of daily living which may include personal care, hygiene, feeding, lifting, and/or toileting
  • Monitor behavior and implement restorative behavior practices with the utmost care and respect for students
  • Work with other support personnel: Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Licensed Specialist in School Psychology, Physical Therapists
  • Provide individual instruction/tutoring both inside and outside of the classroom setting
  • Perform several tasks concurrently under varying deadlines
  • Exercise tact, good judgment, and initiative in dealing with students, staff, and parents.
  • Operate computers and peripheral or assistive equipment
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Identify sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Other duties as assigned


You

  • Have at least one year of experience working with children
  • High School Diploma required
  • 48 college hours preferred
  • Have content knowledge in the area of long-term substitute placements
  • Can pass a criminal background check
  • Have a bachelor's degree and required certification or qualifications of content knowledge to be considered as a full-time Teacher or Teacher Fellow with Compass Rose
