Purpose Statement

The job of Accompanist is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the educational process with specific responsibilities for providing accompaniment to the vocal and/or instrumental music teacher on the piano or other musical instrument during rehearsals and performances.

This job reports to Choir Director

Essential Functions

• Analyzes assigned music prior to rehearsal and performances (e.g. correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient use of rehearsal time and performance schedules.
• Assists the teacher in student activities for the purpose of ensuring efficient use of class time and maintaining a positive learning environment.
• Communicates effectively regarding upcoming events and daily schedules in regards to vocal music schedules for the purpose of providing information and direction regarding plans, activities, schedules, etc.
• Exhibits professional and stage etiquette for the purpose of serving as a model of professionalism at musical productions.
• Rehearses and performs with musical groups and soloist for the purpose of playing full and sectional accompaniment.
• Supports the Choral Director for the purpose of training students in the art of accompaniment.

Other Functions

• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the performance.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: piano playing and sight reading music.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: established audition standards; voice ranges; music theory; and key transpositions.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: repeat the same hand, arm or finger; hear mistakes in music performances; read music in closed and/or far distance; adjust focus and tell where a sound is coming from; work with large groups, solo vocal instrumentals, choral singers, musically talented children, other staff members, and the public; develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from
other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to effect the organization’s services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
