The Town of Essex Finance Department is receiving applications for full time employment as an Accountant.
Under the direction of the Finance Director, and the general guidance of the Assistant Finance Director, the accountant performs skilled accounting, payroll, and bookkeeping in maintaining financial ledgers and records of the Town of Essex and other related work in the operations of the Town as they relate to the duties of the Finance Department. The Accountant is primarily responsible for all aspects of payroll execution from timesheet review to completion of bi-weekly payroll. Reporting responsibilities include monthly, quarterly and annual state and federal filings, annual W-2’s, annual 1095-C’s, and workers compensation reports and processing regular payroll liability payments. The accountant also oversees the billing process for tax administration and miscellaneous receivables including delinquent notices. Investigates billing discrepancies and calculates and prepares necessary adjustments. Posts tax penalties and interest on delinquent accounts, creates tax repayment agreements, processes refunds and performs other tax-related duties.

Applicants are encouraged who have prior experience in accounting in a responsible position. Prior Municipal experience, as well as an Associates or higher in a relevant degree field, is preferred. Essex will consider any combination of education and experience that allows for successful performance in this role. The Town’s goals include hiring the candidate who is best able to meet the objectives of the position. The approximate salary range is $27-$30 per hour with the actual starting salary based on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time hourly position that is covered by our AFSCME union contract.
