Job Description

Overview

At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.

Responsibilities

The Nuclear Chemistry and Engineering (NCE) Group is seeking an outstanding chemist to support research on chemical and nuclear processes. This includes the Hanford Site cleanup, nuclear non-proliferation missions, national security missions, nuclear energy production, nuclear fuel cycle, and tritium production. This position involves planning and performing experiments with radioactive and non-radioactive materials and the subsequent interpretation and reporting of the data from these experiments. This work will require a broad range of process equipment and analytical techniques including the handling radiological materials, collecting and interpreting experimental data and adapting experiments to meet project objectives. The candidate will work under the guidance of senior scientists and engineers in PNNL’s hallmark Category II, Non-Reactor Nuclear Facility, the Radiochemical Processing Laboratory.
  • Investigating actinide chemistry as it relates to nuclear fuel cycle separations, nuclear non-proliferation, and nuclear forensics.
  • Performing research on chemical separations of irradiated nuclear fuel for the recycle of actinides.
  • Configuring laboratory hardware and experimental apparatuses, specifically setting up data acquisition systems.
  • Planning and performing experiments with radioactive and non-radioactive materials and the subsequent interpretation and reporting of the data from these experiments.
  • The ability to design and assemble complex research systems as well as to test and operate these systems, with minimal supervision.
  • Apply spectroscopic tools for characterizing actinide materials and solutions containing actinide ions.
  • Investigate solution thermodynamics relevant to actinide and fission product elements.
  • Participating in separation flowsheet development and testing.
  • Leading or making significant contributions to preparation of high-quality scientific articles, technical reports and presentations that communicate the objective, experimental process, results, and conclusions.
  • Contributing to the writing of winning research proposals and other business development activities for the group.
  • Conducting work in a safe and secure manner.
  • Independently completing assigned tasks, exercising limited judgement on work details and making preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives.
  • Preparing materials for project reviews, technical papers and reports.
  • Building a professional reputation for technical expertise by fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies within specialty.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA -OR-
  • PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with radiological materials in fumehood, glovebox, and/or hotcells.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to work in a chemical laboratory.
  • Experience working in teams, preferably with some leadership experience demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with utilizing Microsoft Office Excel and Mathworks MATLAB software for data analysis and interpretation.
  • Experience with data acquisition using National Instruments LabVIEW software.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
  • Candidate will be trained and must perform to Radiation Worker standards (Radiological Worker II), as well as building and project procedures for managing radioactive and hazardous materials.
  • The candidate will be working with radioactive materials and chemicals in laboratories that are in radiological controlled areas, including radiation areas, radioactive material areas, and contamination areas.
