Job Position: After School Program Coordinator

Reports to: Recreation Coordinator

Summary: The After School Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing and conducting recreational activities for clients and their children in the temporary shelter. Specifically, the After School Program Coordinator will organize and implement a structured after school program for school aged children. This position is part time during after-school hours, generally 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.; 20 hours per week (not inclusive of meetings); Monday-Friday during the school year and some school holidays. During the summer (July-August) this is a full time position as the afterschool program will transition into the summer program.

Duties and Responsibilities (Include but not limited to):

  • Plan, organize, and facilitate the After-school & Enrichment Program
  • Design and implement a calendar each month with activities and assignments to encourage attendee's intellectual, creative, artistic, and athletic enrichment and abilities; assist students in working on and completing after-school program assignments, projects, and activities
  • Monitor children to ensure their health, safety, and physical well-being; Able to perform routine First Aid and CPR; perform first aid in emergencies according to established procedures; enforce and ensure health and safety rules and procedures are observed
  • Interact with children to build self-esteem and form a comfort level with their peers; answer student questions, provide proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude, and general guidance
  • Assist in resolving student disputes; refer serious discipline problems to Recreation Coordinator/Program Director
  • Maintain a clean and organized environment for students; demonstrate and involve students in cleaning and organizing the program activities areas before, during, and after use
  • Perform a variety of low-level clerical duties in support of program activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing materials; log and record information; create and maintain records and files as assigned; answer telephones and decorate bulletin boards each month
  • Operate a variety of after-school program supplies and equipment including athletic equipment, art and crafts equipment, and office equipment as assigned
  • Work with case managers and others in the program to do outreach to promote student enrollment and communicate the objectives and activities of the after-school program
  • Organize trips for the clients and their children according to the needs of the changing client system.
  • Develop linkage agreements with external recreational programs and facilities.
  • Act as a liaison between the site and community based recreational resources.
  • Plan and organize special facility events.
  • Coordinate field trips and attendance to holiday celebrations offered in the community and by DHS
  • Work with community providers/institutions in the development of recreational opportunities for clients,(i.e., Big Buddy programs, PAL, Big Brothers/Big Sisters),students, and others.
  • Maintain contact with museums, theaters, sporting events, and other cultural programs and activities to facilitate awareness and attendance of special events for clients.
  • Escort families to all events to ensure a safe and structured environment for all in attendance.
  • Organize and coordinate parent/escort volunteer groups.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and assist with in-service training as needed
  • Coordinate transportation services to and from all special events with DHS and/or others as needed.
  • Maintain and submit logs of all activities (completed and upcoming).
  • Other assignments and tasks may be added at the discretion of the Recreation Coordinator

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bilingual Required (Must be able to read, write and speak Spanish)
  • 1 year of applicable experience in Shelter or working with children
  • Knowledge of DHS requirements and protocols (preferred)
  • Must be able to multitask with strong organizational skills
  • Must be a people person and have an outgoing, cheerful disposition.

Education/ License:

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associates or Bachelor Degree preferred

Job Type: Part time after school hours September-June, then full-time July-August

License/Certification:

  • CPR Certification Adult and Infant (Required-can be completed upon hire)
  • Mandated Reporter Training (Required- can be completed upon hire)
  • Food Handler Certification (Required- can be completed upon hire))

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $18.00 per hour
