GENERAL SUMMARY (What is done and why.)

The Power Production Worker Apprentice position is primarily responsible for developing the technical skills necessary for safely operating, repairing and maintaining hydro, wind, solar, diesel and gas turbine units and associated auxiliary systems at power production plants. Work is varied in nature and the incumbent applies basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance technologies to work performed. Incumbent works under immediate supervision and in compliance with established policies, procedures and regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Majority of duties, but not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned as necessary.)

  • Serves as an apprentice member in team effort to safely operate, repair and maintain hydro, wind, solar, synch condenser, diesel and gas turbine units and associated auxiliary systems.
  • Makes routine inspections of power generation facilities and all associated infrastructure including but not limited to dams, rubber bladders, forebays, penstocks, waterways and fuel storage areas; identifies and resolves any problems to keep plant operational. Installs and removes flashboards.
  • Under direct qualified supervision may perform switching for maintenance and sectionalizing..
  • Maintains plant buildings, grounds and roadways as directed.
  • Required to act in a safe and courteous manner conducive to good public relations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (Minimum education, experience, technical and communication skill levels and licenses/certificates normally required to perform the duties of this position.)

  • Basic knowledge of power production plant mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance principles including safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of hazardous material handling regulations and environmental regulations related to the maintenance and operation of power generation facilities.
  • Valid Vermont drivers license with a driving record suitable for insurability.
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • General computer skills including email and spreadsheets.
  • Must advance to Power Production Worker Class 1 within 4 years upon starting role.
  • Must have the ability to serve and satisfy internal and external customers and be a strong customer service advocate for the company.
  • Must live within a 35 minute commute of the facility in which the position is located.

This level of knowledge is normally acquired through completion of two-year technical degree or certificate program, or an equivalent in related experience with GMP (3 years).

WORKING CONDITIONS (Typical working conditions associated with this type of work and environmental hazards, if any, which may be encountered in performing the duties of this position.)

Internal Work is normally performed in a plant environment, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is limited. Noise level is occasionally high and includes sounds of turbines, engines and power equipment (tools, etc.). Work involves potential exposure to bodily injury from moving mechanical parts, electric shock and toxic or caustic chemical agents while performing preventive maintenance to building or equipment. Occasionally work is performed in small cramped workspace, at heights up to 150 feet, and around water.

External Frequently work is performed where there is exposure to outside atmospheric conditions or extreme heat/cold or moisture and exposure to traffic while performing plant or dam maintenance functions. Occasionally work is performed in small cramped workspace, at heights up to 150 feet, around water, on uneven and slippery terrains in unsafe environments near rivers.

Special Occasionally work requires incumbent to be on call after hours and on weekends to respond to emergency calls regarding plant operation and maintenance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS (The physical effort generally associated with this position.)

Work involves standing and walking for most of the time, and occasionally requires working at heights up to 150 feet above ground. Work routinely includes pushing, pulling, or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds such as tools, replacement parts and supplies; occasionally includes lifting items up to 75 pounds to shoulder height. Work requires acute olfactory skills in order to detect malfunctioning equipment and electrical shorts. Working conditions, equipment failure and workloads during peak periods may cause increased stress levels.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS/CONTACTS (Positions, other than supervisor and immediate co-workers, with which incumbent has frequent contact and the reason for contact.)

Internal Contact with employees outside of own department is generally related to operation and project coordination with other operational departments.

External Contact with employees outside of GMP is generally limited, but may include plant tours, consultants, engineers, vendors, federal and state regulatory agencies and the general public.

ACCOUNTABILITY (Budget/asset amount managed, revenues/profits produced, and/or other financial resource incumbent is accountable for. Also indicates judgment/decision making level.)

This position is directly responsible for successfully completing assignments related to power plant operation, repair and maintenance and developing the skills necessary to proceed onto next classification in Power Production.

Standard Work Day: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Performs restoration activities as assigned during emergency and service restoration situations, to include after-hours and weekends.

Must live within 35 minutes of the assigned district boundaries under normal driving conditions.
