Description
Under the general direction of the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Assistant Dean for International Students provides strategic and operational oversight of international student marketing, recruitment and retention efforts, manages program enrollment, maintains institutional compliance with federal and state laws and regulations that pertain to international students, serves as Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) for the F-1and J-1 student program.
The Assistant Dean will be the primary officer ensuring compliance with INS regulations, developing and managing international student recruitment, orientation, student health insurance programs, applications and admissions processes, monitoring student academic progress, preparing reports to the federal government's Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, training, budgeting, and collaborating with faculty and staff.

Responsibilities


  • Provides leadership and management in the development of plans for marketing, recruitment, and engagement strategies for international students within the scope of the larger recruitment plan and strategic enrollment plan.
  • Develops and maintains domestic and international relationships and visibility to enhance and promote the University internationally.
  • Develops and directs international application and admissions processes; evaluates and updates application forms and maintains web-based applications; reviews student applications in concert with academic staff, requests missing or corrected documents from applicants, creates new student I-20 forms, follow-up with students who do not attend orientation, student admission for future semesters and tracking and reporting enrollment statistics to administrators and department heads.
  • Coordinates, designs, organizes, implements, and delivers the international student orientation program; invites guest speakers; supervises staff and students in delivering orientation components; maintains and updates programs, international student handbook and webpages as needed.
  • Monitors student academic progress to ensure compliance with INS, SEVP/SEVIS regulations; coordinates necessary interventions with INS on behalf of students; advises students on immigration regulations; evaluates eligibility of student applications for off-campus employment authorization; monitors the international student health insurance, program rates, coverage, and student compliance.
  • Manages and oversees the federal government's Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS); Coordinates the creation, maintenance and updating of student records in SEVIS; prepares reports of accepted applicants, no-shows, student registration, address changes, permission for low-course loads, termination of records, failures to enroll, student graduations and program completions and students with below full-course loads without permission; requests reinstatements of I-20s as necessary; follows up to ensure student records are reactivated when students are reinstated; monitors SEVIS alerts and takes action as necessary; coordinates and participates in the preparation of student enrollment verifications, social security number requests, letters of invitation for family members and other correspondence as requested.
  • Provides technical information and assistance to students, staff, faculty, administrators, and others concerning international student enrollment, federal and state regulations, and SEVP/SEVIS regulations to determine appropriate courses of action in complex circumstances.
  • Maintains current knowledge on changing US Immigration laws and regulations as they apply to international students; ensure compliance with all related SEVP, SEVIS and Department of Homeland Security guidelines, regulations, and reporting requirements.
  • Works with Dean of Graduate Studies on graduate experience and the Graduate student Association; advises international students on cultural competence.
  • Works with Deans to advise on Study Abroad or Exchange programs in development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in international student recruitment, international admissions, international student services, or related areas in a higher education setting
  • Minimum of one year’s experience working with the SEVIS system and documentation for international students including I-20 forms.
  • Current knowledge of INS, SEVP/SEVIS, DHS regulations and reporting requirements as it pertains to international students on F-1 and J-1 student visas
  • Citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work with students, faculty, administrators, and staff with diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Literacy in modern office software and technology; ability to work with databases and CRM systems
  • Ability to occasionally work unconventional hours corresponding to international time zones
  • Ability to occasionally travel as required
