Description:
The Food Fortification Initiative (FFI) is a Center at the Rollins School of Public Health. FFI provides technical assistance to partners in multiple countries in planning, implementing or monitoring fortification programs to prevent malnutrition. The FFI vision of “smarter, stronger, healthier people worldwide by improving vitamin and mineral nutrition” originated with an Emory University professor 20 years ago. FFI was funded to execute a literature review project that aims to assess the dietary, biological and functional outcomes of (1) foods that lack World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, and (2) nutrients that are excluded in current WHO guidelines for fortification. The project will culminate in a comprehensive report and PowerPoint presentation of findings. Additionally, the project will systematically document measurement metrics for fortification outcomes.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- The Associate Academic Research Scientist performs a wide range of highly technical and complex research duties and has documented scientific achievements and increasing technical, management, leadership, and professional expertise necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of research and experimental platforms for analyzing, design and interpreting results.
- Investigates and recommends potential alternative approaches to improve the quality of results of basic and/or translational research.
- Demonstrates increased responsibility through management of teams and leadership of scientific projects by applying advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development, as well as facilitating in some training aspects of other team members.
- Aids in writing IACUC, IRB, Biosafety and other approval documents.
- Oversees quality assurance of research conducted by other team members.
- May assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of instrumentation or methodology development and user support.
- With the approval of the responsible faculty director, may be principal investigators on funded proposals.
- Performs other responsibilities as required.
ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
FFI aspires to hire an Associate Academic Research Scientist. The Associate Academic Research Scientist will be responsible for the following activities, including but not limited to:
- Defining and conducting literature review for all foods (11 total, with option to increase by up to 3 foods), separately.
- Synthesizing results from systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and efficacy trials by food items.
- Identifying evidence gaps where nutrient information or foods have insufficient evidence.
- Organizing all findings and draft project deliverables (report and PowerPoint presentation).
- Coordinating several in-person consultations with fortification experts to present the protocol and preliminary findings, to collate feedback, and to revise project deliverables accordingly.
- Completing project deliverable and all project activities according to the project timeline.
- Working closely with an Analyst and graduate students to ensure the successful completion of all project activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD or MD and five years of professional level experience OR Master's degree and ten years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.
- Laboratory experience will be based on area of assignment.
- Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification.
- NOTE: Applicants applying with a M.D. or equivalent degree must be eligible for a Georgia medical license to meet the minimum qualifications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in nutrition or closely related field and more than five years of relevant experience conducting research and evaluations in the field of micronutrients.
- Professional experience with technical expertise in micronutrient deficiencies, food fortification, and research.
- Demonstrated leadership in nutrition projects from the conception/scoping-phase to dissemination.
- Demonstrated understanding of the nutrition technical assistance community (e.g., WHO, FFI, Academia), including experience working on Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded nutrition projects.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent demonstrated interpersonal skills.
- Fluency in English (spoken and written).
NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department of work. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
