Position Summary
The Gender, Adolescent Transitions and Environment (GATE) Program, an innovative research and practice program dedicated towards improving the lives of adolescents and women in the United States and globally, is situated within the Department of Sociomedical Sciences in the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City.
GATE seeks a highly qualified and experienced candidate to fill the position of Associate Director of Research. The incumbent will preferably have an advanced degree in public health, 6-10+ years of applied practical experience in public health research and practice, preferably global, a good understanding of global health priorities and will be looking for opportunities aligned with our areas of work, including menstrual health and hygiene, education, gender, water, and sanitation.
Our focus of work spans from low-resource settings and communities in the United States and globally, to humanitarian contexts. The Associate Director of Research will also have demonstrated successful experiences in 1.) conducting and managing qualitative and mixed-method research, 2.) developing productive working relationships with other institutions and partners, 3.) strategic and operational planning, 4.) managing and mentoring staff and students (team of 4-5 staff and multiple students), and 5.) conducting research with adolescents and/or women.
The incumbent must have the ability to travel 30% of the time and willingness to travel to low-resource global contexts for extended periods of time for data collection activities, potentially including humanitarian contexts.
This position is contingent upon the availability of grant funding.
Subject to business needs, we may support hybrid work arrangements (partially remote, partially on-site). Options will be discussed during the interview process. Preference is for being based in New York City.
Responsibilities
Research Activities (55%)
- With the GATE Director, manage and lead primarily qualitative and some mixed-method research operations for a range of complex projects across global and US sites, primarily focused on adolescent and women’s health, menstrual health, gender and sanitation.
- Lead and/or support the development of scientific manuscripts for publication and manage the submission process.
- Co-lead the training and capacity building of domestic or global research teams as needed.
- Manage students who support the research activities (e.g., IRB protocols, tool development, data analysis).
- Co-lead research translation efforts, including supporting or presenting research findings at national or global conferences, the development of policy briefs, creation of social media, webinars, knowledge management products (infographics, toolkits), op-eds and other advocacy outputs.
Management (20%)
- Provide overall management support for the GATE program, including co-leading program implementation and liaising with institutional and global partners, staff and student recruitment and hiring.
- Co-lead budget monitoring and development and other administrative tasks, including grant and donor narrative reporting.
- Support the planning and coordination of domestic or global meetings with partner organizations or larger stakeholder groups of relevance.
- Manage junior staff and students, including mentoring and training.
Strategic Planning and Development (20%)
- With the Director, support the development of original grant proposals, the development of concept notes (solicited or unsolicited) and managing submission processes.
- Support the identification of new funding opportunities and conceptualization of new projects.
Perform other related duties as assigned (5%)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 4 years related experience or equivalent in education and experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s or doctoral degree in public health or a related field.
- At least 10 years of related experience.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- 6-10+ years of relevant experience in development and/or international research and project planning.
- Experience with and thorough understanding of the realities of designing and conducting qualitative research in low resource contexts and the United States.
- Experience conducting public health research in low-resource global contexts, on issues related to adolescent and women’s health, and/or water and sanitation.
- Experience conducting qualitative research with adolescent and women on reproductive health and related topics, such as menstrual health and puberty.
- Prior experience living and/or working in low-resource global contexts including humanitarian contexts.
- Proven project management skills and detail oriented.
- Experience in grant writing and management.
Other Requirements

- Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills, including editorial skills.
- Ability to co-lead the development and/or monitoring of program’s budget.
- Strong ability to work independently and as a key member of a team.
