Benefit Specialist (Des Moines, IA)
Summary – Determines, maintains, and terminates member and/or dependent eligibility for health care benefits. Responds to incoming telephone calls from members, dependents, and providers regarding benefits provided by the Plan. Review eligibility and claims data to ensure accuracy of processing in accordance with Plan provisions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities, include, but are not limited to:
- Be the first point of contact for member questions/issues
- Know the plan as outlined in the Summary Plan Description (SPD)
- Professionally and accurately respond to incoming calls from members to include:
- explaining group benefits
- confirming eligibility status
- assisting the callers with their questions or concerns and providing problem resolution
- mailing, emailing or faxing commonly requested forms and letters to members as needed
- Be able to review and understand the meaning of any mailings sent and explain them to members and employers
- Assist with additional client related work as needed and assigned by manager/supervisor
- Expected to handle each call and member walk-in professionally
- Must have compassion and patience for all members that need extra assistance
- Be confident handling difficult situations
- Work independently as well as in a team
- Be able to multi-task and be detail oriented
- Must have superior written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be flexible and willing to pitch in and work together as a team member
- Should have general knowledge of Word and Excel
- This position will require training and continued communication with the Plan Management and Contributions Supervisor for guidance and direction
- Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job
Supervisory Responsibilities - This position has no supervisory role.
Education and/or Experience – Post-high school education or prior related work experience.
Language Skills – Excellent reading comprehension, especially with benefit plan documents and training manuals. Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally.
Mathematical Skills- Ability to apply concepts of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Reasoning Ability - Specialist must be analytical. Specialist must be able to deal with people in stressful situations. Superior communication skills and keen observation is essential. Knowledge of healthcare benefits and applications and attention to detail is required. Specialist must use creativity to continually improve processes and transmission of information, including by applying excellent verbal and visual communication skills to convey information to members, clients and vendors.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - None required.
Physical Demands – Extended periods of sitting and keyboarding and deciphering healthcare information to extract information. May involve some light lifting. Ability to use office equipment such as a copier and fax machine.
Work Environment - Typical office environment that, at times, can be busy and noisy.
Work Schedule
Full time, Monday – Friday, 7:30am - 4:30pm. Required in office (no at-home days).

Pay - Hourly rate ranges from $19.00 - $21.00. Actual rate dependent on location, skills, education, experience and other business factors.
