Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants for a Blaster at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Muscatine, IA to assist in various departments as needed by plant production.
Union Tank Car Company is seeking Blasters at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Muscatine, Iowa. Wages start at $22.35 per hour. Must be willing to work on 2nd or 3rd shift. The Company’s regulatory, engineering and commercial expertise make UTLX the preferred source of railcars and services for many of its customers. Primary Job Responsibilities
:
Below is a general description of the essential functions of this job. This is not an exhaustive list and employees in these classifications may be required to perform additional duties. Not all classifications will be required to perform all job functions.
- Prepares the interior or exterior surface of the tank or hopper car for coating or lining by removing rust, weld slag, scale or other foreign contaminants by directing shot laden compressed air from handheld blast nozzles.
- Uses safety approved air gun to remove grit and dust after blasting. Removes all protective car coverings, blows trucks and other car parts clean and inspects the car to ensure that it has not been damaged.
- Vacuums complete interior of tank/hopper car. Foils and tapes all stainless steel inside tank car as required.
- Maintains equipment and replenishes the short supply.
- Maintain work area in a neat and orderly manner and report potential hazards.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Have experience in machine operation
- Must be able to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently.
- Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly instructions.
- Have analytical and problem solving skills, with a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to perform general mathematic calculations including but not limited to addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, percentages, and division.
- Safety and quality focused.
- Dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime.
Working Conditions:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds safely and able to drag blast hose over full length of railcar.
- Able to pass drug screen and physical.
- Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
- May work in confined spaces and at heights exceeding 4 ft. off the ground with proper PPE and fall protection.
- Close mental and visual attention required, coordinating manual dexterity with mental and visual attention for sustained periods of time.
