Job Summary


The DNR is seeking to fill one (1) seasonal, part-time (80%) Buildings & Grounds Worker position at Myre-Big Island State Park near Albert Lea, MN. Days and hours of work will vary, and will include evenings, weekends and holidays. Anticipated season dates are April 26th through September 26th, each year.

This position will perform custodial and grounds work, routine maintenance, repair, and minor construction on state buildings, structures, and parks and trails land. On occasion, this position may also assist in office and retail operations and perform night security duties.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide labor service to Parks and Trails administered sites and facilities.
  • Perform routine repairs and inspections on equipment and tools.
  • Provide information to the public and provide customer service to DNR facility users.
  • Record and communicate accurate information on work performed to ensure safe facilities and that maintenance and operation needs are completed efficiently.
  • Complete and actively participate in safety and other job related trainings.
  • Perform park security.
  • Sell vehicle permits, camping permits, electricity, firewood, and other items

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, chainsaw, brush saw, lawn mower, small hand tools, and other equipment and tools.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions on labels, in instruction manuals, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to work alone at night, including in remote areas.
  • Ability to operate a phone, two-way radio, computer, cash register, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to provide written information and instructions to the public and other employees.
  • Arithmetic skills sufficient to accurately collect money from the public for various fees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing routine maintenance and repair of small engines, vehicles, and other equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of park rules, policies, and facilities.
  • Recordkeeping skills.
  • Experience in POS system.
  • Experience in the construction trades.
  • Security experience and training.
  • First Aid and CPR training.
  • Current MNDNR basic chainsaw certification or equivalent.
  • Prescribed Fire Training S130/190.
  • Resource management experience including mechanical and chemical methods to control noxious and invasive species.

Physical Requirements

Medium Work - Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50-pound bags of feed maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License with a clear driving record.
