Primary Purpose
The individual in the Business Intelligence Specialist role is a project leader, recognizing timelines and priorities, and organizing the work efforts of both small initiatives and departmental improvements. The BI Specialist may be entrusted with resources and personnel to complete objectives without supervision. In general, the BI Specialist has reached a level of mastery across multiple disciplines in the data management field which allows the ability to see big picture consequences to make tactical decisions. The BI Specialist generally has a strong interest or specific advanced knowledge of a complex concept or tool that is critical for the department, and often serves as the top-level technical expert in one of more highly specialized areas of systems analysis and reporting. The BI Specialist is expected to have strong time and project management skills, to have advanced speaking and communications skills, and to have the ability to think outside the box when designing solutions to both customer and departmental challenges. The BI Specialist proactively identifies areas of improvement within their scope of knowledge. The BI Specialist has attained a level of advanced knowledge or training to work independently not only on tasks assigned by supervisors, but also on problems outside the scope of daily work activities.
Minimum Specifications
Education
- Must have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Masters preferred.
Experience
- Must have six years of experience using Business Intelligence (BI) tools, including Crystal reporting, WEBi reporting and dashboards.
- Must have six years of SQL (Structured Query Language) server-based SQL coding or Oracle PL-SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) experience.
- Must have a minimum of two years as a subject matter expert in a single reporting or data discipline.
- Prefer previous experience within a healthcare organization.
- Prefer previous experience with an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) application such as Eclipsys, Epic, Clarity, or Epic within a healthcare organization.
Equivalent Education and/or Experience
- May have an equivalent combination of education and experience to substitute for both the education and the experience requirements.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
- Prefer related certification(s) in Epic and/or Clarity.
- Prefer related certification(s) in SAP data reporting.
- Prefer related certification(s) in Cisco data management.
- Prefer Category I Project Management Professional (PMP) certification by the Project Management Institute (other project management training considered).
Skills or Special Abilities
- Must have an expert level knowledge of SQL (Structured Query Language) / Oracle relational and multi-dimensional database structures, schemas, stored procedures, views, and queries.
- Must be able to build and run SQL queries, Crystal reports, and use other reporting tools.
- Must have an expert level knowledge of Reporting and Analytics.
- Must have expert level knowledge regarding EMR, word processing, database, and spreadsheet software.
- Must have an expert level knowledge of commonly used programming concepts, practices, and procedures within the Information Technology field.
- Must have advanced knowledge of critical tools and concepts and can explain these concepts to others on the team.
- Must have strong analytic and computer skills in addition to an extensive knowledge of database management and data analysis.
- Must be able to develop system specifications and decision flows, in the form of flow charts or equivalent techniques, from written business requirements.
- Must have experience with data modeling, warehouse design and virtual universe structures.
- Must be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills, about system issues.
- Must demonstrate an understanding of patient data and the use of this data in a healthcare environment, as applicable.
- Must be able to accept verbal and/or written problems or direction from senior staff and business users and demonstrate an ability to prepare specifications that reflect provided information (with coaching from senior personnel).
- Must have exceptional planning skills with a results-oriented record of achievement and the ability to set goals, meet deadlines, and evaluate results particularly regarding significant changes within an organization and with respect to the organization’s relationship with the community or marketplace.

Responsibilities
- Performs root cause analysis or configuration overview for clinical leadership and succinctly and accurately relay findings or information as well as recommendations to leadership as needed.
- Proactively identifies areas for improvement in applications and develop solutions for those problems outside of leadership-assigned projects or tasks.
- Serve as a mentor for senior and intermediate analysts, providing them feedback on protocols, procedures, and other processes in place at Parkland.
- Organizes the work effort for large initiatives (such as Meaningful Use, New Parkland Hospital, Epic Upgrade, 1115 Waiver, etc.) and ensures that timelines are met and that projects are implemented successfully.
- Leads the design, development, and implementation of complex customer analytic solutions by applying an expert level understanding of Business Intelligence best practices
- Applies an expert knowledge and understanding in systems and data analysis to conduct in-depth evaluation of source system data and processes. Uses industry standard data modeling and reporting tools to generate richly documented, creatively designed data models, reports, and other content as requested by leadership.
- Facilitates communication and problem resolution with physicians & staff in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Documents each step of development to ensure adequate communication within the team and customers.
- Actively provides prompt responses to customer problems and inquiries. Makes the customer’s experience the priority in all operations.
- Resolves ITSM incidents and requests independently within SLA timelines. Takes ownership and resolves complicated/code intensive incidents and requests.
- Performs upgrades and/or routine maintenance for the report writing team.
- Mentors and trains other team members by introducing them to new technologies, methods, and learning resources.
- Handles conflict between team members, utilizing diplomacy, without allowing personal feelings to influence or impact the outcome negatively.
- Models’ behavior for team members by following all department procedures (Weekly Status Reports, Customer Delivery, Customer Communications, Request Creation, etc.)
Job Accountabilities
- Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
- Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
