HJF is seeking a Carpenter for the Office of the VP for Finance and Administration, Office of the Assistant VP for Administration, Facilities Division. The Division's functions include maintenance and repair of buildings and structures; maintenance, repair, and installation of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning and refrigeration (IVA & R) systems; maintenance and repair of utilities, water, sewage, and similar systems; grounds maintenance; and provision of associated building services. The primary purpose of this position is to perform work involved in the construction, alterations, maintenance, and repair of buildings, structures, partitions, cabinets, bookcases, furniture, and other items composed of wood, wood substitutes, composites, etc.

Responsibilities:
  • Performs the full range of carpentry work involved in construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair of buildings and structures using wood, wood substitutes, and composite materials where accuracy, spacing, and fit are essential and structural soundness and appearance are important.
  • Plans and completes projects from initial layout to final assembly or installation. Selects materials and supplies required to complete the project. Works from drawings, sketches, blueprints, and own knowledge of construction methods. Measures and cuts material to required length and dimensions. Installs rafters, studs, sills, plates, braces, floors, sub-floors, beams, posts, bulkheads, and panels.
  • Builds and installs window frames, doors, Formica, plastic moldings, carpet, stairs, tile (vinyl, linoleum, ceramic), laths, etc. Selects and installs appropriate hardware to complete the project. Installs items and materials by nailing, bolting, mortising, doweling, and gluing. Planes, sands, and finishes work as required.
  • Assembles metal lockers, storage cabinets, bins, and similar items Replaces and repairs locks for desks, file cabinets, storage cabinets, lockers, student carrels, doors equipment, freezers, etc. Incumbent cuts keys by duplication, by code, using code books and code machine, by impression, by reading the tumblers and filing by hand, or by disassembling the lock and filing the keys by hand
  • Plants and maintains trees, shrubs, flowers, and plants throughout the University grounds/outdoor areas. Trims and prunes trees to control growth and maintain a balance between roots and top. Helps control unwanted vegetation
  • Operates farm and garden equipment such as tractors, mowers, sprayers, sweepers, vacuums, etc. to prepare and maintain the University's roads, grounds, garages, and plazas. Operates equipment on all types of terrain as well as in areas where maneuvering is difficult. Operates road sweepers and snow removal equipment. Performs preventive and operator maintenance on equipment
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Applies knowledge of wood, wood substitutes, composite materials, construction methods and techniques, and shop mathematics.
  • Applies skill in operating all types of carpentry equipment to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and appropriate appearance.
  • Applies the ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and building codes.
  • Requires knowledge and ability to estimate the quality and quantity of material required for projects.
  • Applies knowledge and skill in cutting and installing plastic laminates and glass.
  • Knowledge of gardening methods and techniques; plant growth patterns and characteristics to prune, plant, and prune/shape for appearance and health.
  • Operates a wide variety of tractors, sweepers, and towed equipment.
Physical Capabilities:
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, climb, pull, and lift heavy objects

Work Environment:
  • This position will take place indoors and outdoors on all areas.

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience is required
