OVERVIEW
Each year refugees and immigrants come to the United States to seek a better life and/or protection from persecution in their home country. To help them build their lives in the United States, USCRI offers pro-bono and low-bono legal services for these refugees and immigrants by providing competent and comprehensive immigration legal services through various programs.
In New York, Washington, D.C., Detroit, MI, Houston, TX, USCRI is providing pro bono legal services to Afghan parolees who have entered the U.S. since July 29, 2021 and need assistance applying for legal status in the US. USCRI seeks to hire an on-call case aide who will assist the legal department with in-person and telephonic oral interpretation and written translation services for USCRI clients appearing before USCIS Asylum Offices in these four locations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Schedule and conduct interpretation services for clients in-person, video-conference, and telephonically, as needed;- Translate documents from Dari/Pashto to English;
- Attend in-person asylum interviews in at least one of the following locations:
- New York City, Newark, Buffalo, and Colchester, VT;
- Arlington, VA;
- Detroit, MI (potentially Chicago, IL);
- Houston, TX;
- Provide no more than 30 hours of service per week;
- Perform administrative, data-collection tasks, and reporting duties as assigned;
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Staff Attorney and legal services management.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Excellent written and oral communication skills in Dari, Pashto and English;- Two (2) years of experience working in a legal or similar setting preferred;
- Bachelor's or Associate’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience preferred;
- Ability to work remotely and be independently motivated;
- Ability to travel to accommodate in-person interpretation services;
- Commitment to working in a diverse and challenging working environment;
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently;
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel and database programs;
- Must pass a criminal background and other screening requirements;
- Candidate must have dedication to the human rights of refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers and displaced people;
- Demonstrated support of USCRI’s values by exhibiting respect for others, maintenance of confidential information and an appreciation of a multicultural workplace.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Satisfactory completion of USCRI’s Orientation and Training;- Complete additional training as identified by supervisor or Human Resources.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity;- Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands;
- Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying; and
- Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard measurements).
