Piedmont Geriatric Hospital (PGH) is now hiring a Clinical Informatics Educator. This position will coordinate and provide instruction to PGH nursing staff, enabling them to provide high-quality patient care and to maintain compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
Some responsibilities involved in this role include:
- Conducting training programs for staff, ensuring ongoing education of the evolving health information system
- Educating and instructing staff on use of new technologies
- Researching ongoing healthcare trends
- Managing Nursing related aspects of employee training within VLC (the Virginia Learning Center)
- Assisting with nursing related aspects of orientation for clinical staff
Some knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in this position include:
- Considerable knowledge or experience involving information science as related to nursing.
- Must have a strong understanding of workflows within all facility departments and understand how they integrate into the EHR.
- Ability to proactively and independently prioritize requests and business needs.
- Clear comprehension of the implications for the EHR implementation.
- Ability to facilitate post-implementation change management activities including process mapping of current state workflows, review of standard operating procedures to identify gaps in processes, and impacts to facility.
- Strong Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Firm understanding of health science, computer science, and information technology and how the three integrate.
- Excellent collaboration, meeting management, and group facilitation skills.
What is Piedmont Geriatric Hospital?
PGH is a 123-bed, gero-psychiatric hospital, operated by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). PGH is Virginia’s only state Mental Health Facility solely dedicated to evaluation and treatment of persons aged 65 and older. The goal of care is to facilitate discharge to a less restrictive setting by assisting patients to improve and/or maintain their physical, mental and social functioning.

PGH is located in the picturesque rural setting of the Southside region of Virginia. PGH is just 60 miles from the state capital (Richmond), 65 miles from the Blue Ridge Mountains, and 144 miles from the waves of Virginia Beach.

Minimum Qualifications
- Current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required
- Considerable knowledge or experience involving information science as related to nursing required
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge and skills in the development, publishing, and loading of programs in VLC (Virginia Learning Center) preferred
- Experience working with inpatient geriatric and/or mental health population preferred.
- Considerable experience working as a super-user or other advanced-user within EHRs, particularly Cerner Millennium preferred
- MSN preferred
