Position Summary:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist reports to a Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Supervisor. Performs a variety of both routine and complex clinical laboratory tests in accordance with established standards and procedures. These require a professional level of knowledge to properly execute and analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical. Specific duties may vary according to laboratory and shift assigned.
Education:
Work requires formal educational background in chemistry, hematology, immunohematology and microbiology normally acquired through completion of a two or four year post-secondary school program in clinical laboratory technology/medical technology and/or equivalent education and training in microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, or related field.
Licensure, Certification, Etc.:
Certification in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science, MLT/MT/MLS, ASCP or a nationally recognized professional organization is preferred .
Work Experience:
This role is intended for Clinical Laboratory Scientists/Medical Technologist with a minimum of 2 years' experience and verified/recognized certification.
Completion of clinical rotation during final year of bachelor's degree program or (one year) equivalent clinical lab experience or course work specific to the discipline. For this level, the employee must demonstrate certification accepted by the Department of Pathology, or MS degree plus 2 years relevant clinical laboratory experience in an approved CLIA laboratory.
This role is intended for certified CLS/MT's with greater than 2 years of experience. Promotion to this position may be achieved through advancement program for certified/registered CLS 2/MLS or MT if a rating of (2) proficient or greater is achieved on the second annual JHH performance evaluation; and verification of education and current accepted certification.
Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of clinical laboratory tests and equipment.
Ability to analyze and operate technical and scientific equipment, perform a range of tests and developmental assessments with the highest degree of accuracy and to correlate normal tests results in a healthy state to anomalous test results and the presence of disease. Ability to perform successfully despite sudden deadlines and changing priorities, maintaining personal composure in high stress situations. Ability to exercise initiative and judgment.
Ability to maintain effective communication skills within the department and with other health-care professionals. Ability to work independently, accurately determining appropriate procedures and methods to obtain test results.
Ability to troubleshoot problems with equipment or test methods.
Ability to assist in the training of new employees, students and physicians in laboratory methodology. Ability to use and understand computer system reference materials and Laboratory Standard Operating Procedure Manuals.
