The mission of this position is to help Church members understand the story of the Church's humanitarian and charitable work, so that they can feel inspired to close the gap between good intention and action in their life. (This supports the WSRS Objective 4). This position supports the accelerated need to communicate and shed a positive light on all the good that the Church and Welfare and Self-Reliance Services (WSRS) is doing to help care for those in need.

The global crisis events in these past few years have increased viewership and interest in all media channels about the service work of Welfare and Self-Reliance Services. The Media Specialist will assist in coordinating and providing media resources and awareness support in areas of print, social media and online publications. The Media Specialist will work with local area communications contacts to help provide awareness for their local WSRS related stories.

This position will assist the Manager of Communications to coordinate and curate WSRS related stories with Newsroom, Church Communications Division (CCD), Church News/Deseret News and other media entities to develop cohesive communication and media campaigns that effectively increase our audience reach and viewership. This position will also help build relationships and partnerships with Newsroom and CCD to provide video production support for high-profile stories related to WSRS services. These stories may also be requested for General Welfare Committee reports that happen quarterly.


To provide a wide variety of communication-related functions and services across the department, including:

40% - Coordinate and interact with local area WSRMs/AWSRMS to gather WSRS related service stories from the field and support WSRS Manager of Communications with media requests to curate stories; communicate and coordinate stories to Church Newsroom, Church News and other media sources (working with CCD); Church divisions and organizations.

20% - Assist internal communication needs with collection of stories to share in Newsletters

20% - Help develop and maintain media reports for tracking purposes and strategy development. Identify opportunities to increase awareness and engagement in a global setting.

20% - Write up and editing of stories and presentations as needed


Bachelor's degree and 8 years experience or a Masters degree and 6 years experience. Field of studies should be in Communications, Information Systems, or a related field.

Experience should be in a communications and/or media role that may include library/media center technical and reference services ( including metadata standards, taxonomy/authority control tools). Digital/content asset management or similar relational databases.

Required Skills

Basic understanding of project management principles and ability to organize complex collections.

Proficiency with computer applications and other office tools.

Excellent English language written and verbal skills.
