General Information

The University Career Center’s Coordinator for Employer Outreach and Events increases access to career-related networks for students by nurturing and developing new recruiting relationships through outreach to employer prospects and management of employer-centered recruiting events including career fairs, employer panels and more.

Duties and Responsibilities
The primary duties of this position include:
Collaboration & Outreach
Develop relationships with faculty, staff, employers, and alumni with the common goal of increasing access to career-related networks for all students, regardless of background or social capital. Proactively identify and address gaps (ie industry, job function or geographic area) where student interest is greater than the existing network. Nurture existing employer relationships that we have already established to ensure continued effective communication and service. Attend local Chamber of Commerce events and other Harrisonburg/Rockingham County employer events to connect with local and regional employers.

Event Management
Coordinate various employer events (including Practice Interview Event, Employer-led resume reviews, Industry Panels, etc.).
Serve on career fair team that oversees the planning and coordination of 8 career fairs annually. Work with Communications Coordinator to develop marketing strategy to include communication with employers, students, faculty and staff.

Handshake Administration
Assist with Handshake usage data collection and reporting, including reports on students and employers using our services, as well as prospective reports on employers we want to connect with. Approve employer events and interview schedules as needed.

Curricular Alignment
Develop partnerships between employers, alumni and faculty to inspire curricular connections to career paths, industries, job roles, and career preparation. Collaborate and support Career Advisor/Liaisons on techniques and strategies for developing new employer relationships and coordinate their efforts to do so. Collaborate and consult with career advisors serving as liaisons to academic units to ensure information about opportunities between employer services and the liaisons are coordinated and well publicized.

Diversity, Inclusion and Equity
Collaborate with DEI Coordinator to oversee efforts in the employer relations and recruiting area that increase employer awareness of JMU’s minority and under-represented students, including special programs aimed at enhancing connections and increasing hiring of underrepresented students. Ensure that employers are conducting their recruiting activities in a manner that is consistent with stated policies regarding diversity and inclusion.

Career Advising
Provide comprehensive career advising to students and recent alumni, individually and in groups. Administer and interpret career assessments with students as needed. Empower students to explore careers and develop effective search strategies for their career goals. Coach students to effectively articulate the value of their JMU education. Provide career resources regarding the job/internship search and graduate school search. Be able to discuss with students and recent alumni how their social identities impact or are impacted by their job search, graduate school search, or post-graduate careers. Seek continued learning about one’s social identities and how potential biases may show up when working with students and in programming.

Collaboration
Actively participate in departmental meetings, contributing to discussions and decision making in a professional manner. Show collegial courtesy by responding to requests in a timely manner. Share information and communicate regularly with supervisor. Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective communication with constituents and colleagues, including departmental and university colleagues, faculty, employers, parents, and other constituents.

Professional Development
Stay current on workforce trends, issues related to recruiting entry level talent, higher education, career-related and industry trends, and student development theory through research, conferences, articles, webinars and collaboration with peers in the field. Demonstrate the ability to work with diverse populations by seeking additional training in topics such as identity, social justice, equity, communication, emotional intelligence, etc.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Experience coordinating events and logistics including venue/room reservations, catering, publicity, set-up registration and event evaluation
  • Experience working with multiple types of stakeholders simultaneously
  • Experience communicating event details and logistics through email and phone and in person
  • Experience working with Microsoft applications and system-wide software systems
  • Proven customer service skills
  • Ability to manage operations independently and as part of a team
Preferred:
  • Bachelors with relevant experience
  • Experience with Handshake career management system
  • Experience working in career services, higher education, or employee recruitment
  • Knowledge of JMU Community
  • Use of spreadsheet and database management programs

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
