At Centers Against Violence (formerly Women's Aid in Crisis) Advocates will provide immediate crisis intervention and related services to adult or child survivors of sexual assault or domestic violence. The Crisis Advocates will be cross-trained to mirror many of the responsibilities of the Victim Advocate. As Centers Against Violence is a 24-hour operation it is imperative that all staff be available to cover any shift as needed. Our primary concern is client safety and having staff at the shelter 24/7 is extremely important. Your primary schedule will be worked out between you and your supervisor but as things change you may be asked to cover any shift on any day.
Crisis Advocates are professionals trained to support victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, stalking, etc... They offer survivors information, emotional support, help to find resources, assisting with filling out paperwork, and sometimes even going to court to support a survivor. Crisis Advocates may also contact organizations, such as criminal justice or social service agencies, to get help or information for survivors.
Crisis Advocates offer survivors information about the different options available to them and support survivors' decision-making. Crisis Advocates utilize a victim-centered, trauma-informed approach to assisting survivors with decision-making options. Crisis Advocates are not judgmental in any way, shape, or form. Position Description: The following are the essential functions of the job being described. POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Using a victim-centered and trauma-informed approach to service provision, the Crisis Advocate will assist survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence, or their families, through in-person or telephone support as needed. Examples of duties include, but are not limited to:
- Ensures Survivor Safety and help develop a safety plan including a lethality assessment;
- Ensures Survivors are informed of their rights and that their rights are upheld;
- Notifies Survivors of all hearing dates and changes in case status; educate the survivor of the stages of the criminal justice system; assist survivors in completing paperwork as needed;
- Assists Survivors in applying for Compensation Benefits which may include identifying and notifying crime victims of the availability of compensation, assisting them with the application forms and procedures, obtaining necessary documentation, and/or checking on the status of claims;
- Provides on-site coverage for hotline and shelter program;
- Attends emergency and/or final court hearings;
- Serves a liaison between the prosecutor, law enforcement, and/or court; Intervenes between creditors, landlords, employers, etc. on behalf of survivors;
- Provides emergency room accompaniment;
- Provide transport to clients - Must have drivers license;
- Assists Survivors with preparing an impact statement;
- Provides assistance to survivors with notification of a perpetrators release from jail or from corrections when needed;
- Makes referrals to appropriate service providers;
- Assists with preparation of monthly and annual reports for funding agencies;
- Attends a minimum of 8 hours of approved trainings per year;
- Must complete 100 or more hours of trainings to become certified within the first 2 years of employment;
- Provides information on survivors’ legal rights and protections;
- Provides emotional support to victims;
- Helps survivors find shelter and transportation; provides transportation to survivors as needed;
- Attends team meetings as required;
- Functions as CAV’s community liaison if needed;
- Provides awareness activities to the community;
- Works with diverse populations (clients and allied agencies) in a culturally informed manner;
- Speaks publicly to groups on issues relating to our work;
- Flexible to travel, sometimes overnight, for meetings or trainings;
- Assists with shelter resident needs, such as supplies, medication, personal care items, etc.;
- Completes required agency and grant paperwork in a timely manner;
- Other duties as assigned;

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED; Continued Education is preferred but not required.
Minimum Experience: Experience or training in the victim services field is preferred but not required.
Skills: Ability to become efficient in the use of required technology.
CAV’s Crisis Advocates will be supervised by the Shelter Manager & Executive Director.
PHYSICAL:
Requires prolonged standing or sitting. Requires frequent bending, stooping, or stretching. Requires lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Requires the ability to distinguish letters and symbols. Requires some climbing of ladders for changing light bulbs and making beds.
MENTAL:
Concentrated mental and or visual activity is required for gathering information and handling clients, verbal communication skills, reading, and writing. The employee must respond to emergency situations in a calm, professional manner.
ENVIRONMENTAL:
Work is performed in an office environment. Frequent exposure to contagious diseases from infectious clients, exposure to electrical current from equipment in the area. Exposure to atmospheric hazards such as dust, odors, poor ventilation, and fumes.

Requires the use of office equipment, such as computers, telephones, copiers, fax machines, calculators, etc.
