General Summary

The Crushing Plant Supervisor will be responsible for the day to day plant operations to include all aspects of the crushing plant, including the development of the quarry downstream to stockpile management. The incumbent supervises direct reports work assignments and the performance management appraisal process. In addition, the individual will support the hiring, development, and training of support personnel. This position inspects work in progress and ensures that it is performed to company standards. The role will work semi-independently while practicing absolute confidentiality. Good judgment and common sense is required in all duties and any other tasks as assigned. Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday with weekend work as required. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) as required. This job description provides an overview of responsibilities and task to be performed. It is not intended to be an all-inclusive job description as needs tend to change over time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety

  • Complies with all safety policies, procedures, and established safe practices and ensures that all direct reports do the same. Reports all unsafe conditions and actions to a supervisor and/or the Manager Safety and Health.
  • Trains, develops, and monitors the safety practices (including PPE) of own employees through regularly scheduled safety meetings, one on one development, reminders and disciplinary action, if necessary
  • Follows all requirements listed in the Supervisor Safety Procedure Manual (SSPM) including, but not limited to, safety training, emergency procedures, accident reporting and investigation, and employee observations.
  • Ensures compliance of production staff with all policies and procedures, OSHA, and MSHA guidelines.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area and meets other housekeeping needs as required by Sunrock, MSHA 30 CFR 56.20003, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled safety meetings.
  • Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Understand that maintaining safety is very critical of all positions within the quarry and is the first consideration before starting work. It is the responsibility of the Plant Supervisor to enforce both MSHA and company rules and policies when working alone or with others and to educate employees on these rules and policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Managerial

  • Provides leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
  • Supervises/managers/directs the selection, training, development, appraisal, and work assignments of own employees.
  • Prioritizes, organizes, and delegates assignments.
  • Trains and develops hourly personnel. This includes recognizing and assessing an employee s abilities to perform the job duties effectively and recommend, as well as initiate, development programs to achieve the employee s full personal and production potential.
  • Be consistent, fair, and equitable in all disciplinary actions and communicate with the Plant Manager and Assistant Plant Manager and Human Resources personnel regarding all disciplinary problems with employees. Consistently employs the company s performance development process as needed including corrective action plans, reviews, and commendations.


Production

  • Organizes, plans, and schedules the day to day activities of the plant to achieve the daily and monthly production goals established by the Plant Manager.
  • Coordinates with Plant Manager/Assistant Plant Manager, supervisors, and plant lead personnel on absences, vacations, etc. and properly schedules time off. Reviews recorded time for hourly employees to ensure accuracy and justification of the hours expended against product produced. Organizes and plans work for timely completion and eliminates excessive overtime.
  • Initiates and executes an organized production schedule under the approval of the Plant and Assistant Plant Manager. Reports deficiencies, problems, schedule changes, etc. to Plant and Assistant Plant Manager. Maintains ongoing communication with the Plant and Assistant Plant Manager regarding status of production, projects, etc.
  • Understands and personally evaluates the potential capacities of the equipment (primary and secondary crushing plant and mobile equipment) and makes recommendations and adjustments to achieve daily, monthly, and annual production goals.
  • Trains personnel how to efficiently use and maintain equipment to achieve optimum production.
  • References instruction/operator/service manuals for the equipment and contacts manufacturers in order to ensure proper maintenance of equipment. This position is also responsible for training subordinates on how to maintain and repair equipment.
  • Identifies, confronts, and corrects the misuse of company equipment with employees.
  • Supervises completion of all repairs to any equipment with regards to the manufacturer s specifications.
  • Schedules, monitors, and oversees the quarry blasting.
  • Works with managers and the QC department to monitor and maintain specifications of materials produced

Financial

  • Assists in preparation of annual operating plan and costing reports to operate the quarry in a cost-effective manner.
  • Ensures all production, maintenance, and other operating decisions will enable the department to meet their budgets.

Equipment

  • Maintains and repairs, properly trains, and supervises subordinates in the primary, secondary, maintenance and repair of plant equipment. Supervises completion of repairs per manufacturer s specifications.
  • Possesses the ability to operate mobile equipment safely and proficiently (loader, dozer, backhoe, off-road trucks, etc.) and properly train employees to safely achieve optimal production potential of equipment. Ensures pre-shift exams are consistently and accurately completed on all mobile equipment and that equipment is not operated until safety and mechanical problems are corrected.
  • Supervises completion of repairs per manufacturer s specifications

Environmental Compliance

  • Maintains and educates subordinates on all quarry operations and equipment in compliance with all environment regulations and permits and understands the overall significance and ramifications of non-compliance. Regulations include air quality, water quality, land quality, waste disposal, and others that may apply.
  • Cleans up of all spills in an approved manner.
  • Prevents oil and grease spills and the dumping of waste materials.
  • Maintains knowledge of all materials used and the hazards identified on MSDS.
  • Maintains and operates dust suppression systems as required.
  • Maintains water control devices and structures at the site to prevent runoff, spills, and soil erosion.
  • Responds immediately to any incident with potential environmental impact.
  • Makes recommendations to enhance environmental responsibility.

Administration

  • Utilizes excellent organizational and recordkeeping skills to accurately prepare the following on a timely basis: Daily reports, MSHA work place inspection log, primary crusher report/log, service and repair log, tools/parts inventories, data for blasting reports, and pre-shift inspection reports.
  • Maintains meaningful records (correlate times, dates, utilization of equipment, etc.) of wear items such as screens, liners, belting, etc., Maintains tool inventory, purchase orders, accident reports, employee absence reporting, and disciplinary action forms as needed.
  • Utilizes proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet graphics, etc.

Customer Service

  • Assists Plant Manager and Assistant Plant Manager in communicating effectively with customers, neighbors, and appropriate public officials as needed.
  • Maintains a high standard of quality products for customers and works closely with quality control to ensure this happens.
  • Maintains a high degree of integrity and conveys a positive public image of self and company to the community.

Required Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations in English. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals in English. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Handles multiple projects simultaneously.

Physical Demands

Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily administrative nature.

Required Experiences

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required. Associates or Bachelor s degree in related field preferred. Three (3) to five (5) years related experience required. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
