Position Summary
A career in Damage Prevention will provide the opportunity to protect company assets from damages, encumbrances, and encroachments on all distribution and transmission pipelines, their associated abutments, land rights-of-way and easement rights. This also may include providing oversight and inspecting to ensure asset protection and compliance with SJI procedures.

Roles within Damage Prevention are providing safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to customers without adverse effects on employees, the public, customers, or the environment. Incident-free operation continues to be the primary objective of this function. The team is responsible for protecting the Company’s underground infrastructure and supporting our damage prevention program, including oversite of contractors and outreach to 3rd party excavators and the public. This is an operational role that requires ensuring compliance is maintained with state, federal and corporate pipeline safety regulations, and standards.
Essential Functions:
  • Liaise between contractors, municipalities, developers, landowners, and SJI departments to address issues or concerns
  • Conduct quality audits on locators to ensure compliance is maintained while updating electronic systems
  • Facilitate education sessions regarding safe digging practices
  • Respond to high profile facility locates, trouble locates, incidents, and emergencies
  • Monitor and work with the Locate Contractors to correct performance
  • Monitor and follow-up on daily ticket load to prevent future damages
  • Conduct damage investigations at time of damage or during research
  • Observe excavation work on or near high profile facilities to ensure proper markings are maintained
  • Assist system Integrity departments, such as leak survey and corrosion, as needed
  • Serve as a resource for team members with less experience
Qualifications
Required Skills:
  • Ability to work with a limited degree of supervision and provide oversight on complex new assignments
  • Understanding of how interdepartmental teams coordinate their efforts and resources to achieve objectives
  • Proficiency in a range of technical processes and procedures acquired through job-related training or considerable on-the-job experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate and deliver information to a group of 30-50 individuals
Required Background:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2- 4 years of related experience
  • 5 + Years of Utility locating experience
