Deckhands are primarily responsible for the safety of fellow crewmembers, the vessel, the cargo, and the environment. Deckhands perform tasks associated with building and breaking tow, as well as vessel cleanliness and maintenance.

Deckhand perform tasks in all weather conditions both outside and in the confines of the vessel while navigating the western rivers. Work is performed on rotating shifts, 6 hours on/6 hours off.

Essential Deckhand Responsibilities:
  • Build and break tow.
  • Inspect, correct or notify others of any conditions which affect safety of people or cargo.
  • Handle rigging during tow building, locking and landing work.
  • Examine cables, wires, and lines to insure they are fit for use. Use tools to tighten or loosen same as needed.
  • Effectively handle cables, wires and lines to secure barges in safe and environmentally appropriately fashion.
  • Perform basic vessel maintenance including, but not limited to painting, cleaning, and basic engine room maintenance.
  • Communicate clearly on a VHF radio, understand and implement instructions provided by the vessel Captain.
  • Effectively use all safety equipment as required by company policies
  • Must possess or have the ability to possess Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC)

Minimum Educational and Job Qualifications:
  • Learn and adhere to all CTC policies, USCG and federal regulations

Preferred Educational and Job Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Prior experience in a similar position within the marine transportation industry
  • Prior experience in a safety sensitive position

Physical Capabilities:
Must be able to perform the following:
  • Traverse boats, barges, and tows a minimum of two (2) miles per day.
  • Transport equipment of 60 to 100 pounds up to 1000 feet.
  • Ascend/Descend a 90 degree ladder up to 40 feet.
  • Move, transport, and position equipment up to 100 pounds.
  • Position self to move through 18 inch diameter hatch.
  • Move two (2) feet horizontally and vertically.
  • Maintain constant communication with crew members.
  • Ability to recognize and identify distant objects, and recognize distances between objects
  • Constantly work in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Work shift a min. of 12 hrs. (could be up to 15)
