The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the city towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, providers, visitors, volunteers, and people in custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledge experts.

The DOC seeks to recruit a Deputy Director for the Tablet Operations Unit assigned to the Division of Programs and Community Partnerships. The selected candidate will report to the Assistant Commissioner of Advancement and Enrichment Programs, and they will oversee staff in multiple facilities as they distribute and collect tablets, enter and monitor data, and assist Persons in Custody (PICs) with utilizing the various tablet features. With latitude of independent judgement, the Deputy Director’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Supervise a team of Uniformed and Non-Uniformed staff.
  • Manage the distribution of tablets to new PICs.
  • Manage the collection of tablets from PICs upon their discharge to the community or state custody.
  • Ensure data pertaining to distribution, collection, and usage are entered accurately and timely.
  • Expand content by fostering partnerships with external parties.
  • Monitor technological developments to ensure the agency contracts with a “best of class” vendor.
  • Develop, evaluate and refine performance indicators for the Tablet Unit.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations regarding the utilization of various tablet features.
  • Motivate and mentor direct reports by communicating clear expectations, setting performance
objectives, providing regular and timely feedback, ensuring and supporting professional growth.
  • Convene regular team and stakeholder meetings to ensure PICs have consistent access to the tablets,
and optimally use the available content and features.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in public or business administration, sociology, criminology, mathematics, statistics, or related fields; or

2. An associate degree from an accredited college in public or business administration, sociology, criminology, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in public or business administration, community relations, social work, mathematical or statistical research; or

3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, and four years of Full-time satisfactory experience as described in “2” above; or

4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1”, “2”, or “3” above. College education may be substituted for up to two years of experience on the basis of 30 semester credits for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.

For Assignment Level II and III, in addition to meeting the qualification requirements above, one additional year of the experience described in “2” above is required for Assignment Level II and two additional years of experience for Assignment Level III

Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Information Technology, Creative Arts Therapy, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, or a related field.
  • Supervisory experience in a group, community, educational, or institutional setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and experience working with justice involved populations.
  • Knowledge of tablet-related programming, ability to think quickly and creatively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of correctional staff.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, prepare written reports and documents.
  • Knowledge of human development and behavior, counseling techniques, behavior modification and intervention techniques.
  • Ability to mentor and provide positive interaction, guidance, and leadership to people in custody.
  • Excellent writing, communication, inter-personal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
