Design Technology Director Job at SGM
As our Design Technology Director, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining companywide CAD standards, managing a team of CAD professionals, working with staff from throughout the organization to develop and implement workflows and design processes to make the most efficient use of CAD programs and tools, training and mentoring engineers in the efficient use of CAD programs and tools, and providing QA/QC review of 3D and 2D deliverables.
You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects related to land development, traffic/transportation, structural (BIM, Revit, etc..), drainage, utility and water/wastewater systems for private and municipal clients. Typical projects will require the generation of construction plan sets in accordance with design and drafting standards of various review agencies. Typical elements of these projects include site layout, storm drainage, roads and pathways, grading plans, concrete and asphalt hardscape design including curb, gutter and sidewalks, utility infrastructure, water, sewer and storm sewer systems, and erosion and sediment control plans. Also, integration of these plans and three-dimensional models with Building Information Systems (such as Revit) would be required. A basic knowledge of and integration with MicroStation is required.
The position also is anticipated to provide the direction and mentoring required to link each of the technological design requirements of the service offerings that SGM provides on multi-disciplined projects as applicable.
Typical duties and responsibilities of this position are:
- Direct and/or prepare complete sets of civil construction drawings using Civil 3D, including sheet setup, plans, profiles, notes and details,
- Work with Engineers to design and layout a project using Civil 3D upon receiving sufficient design information,
- Manage digital files per company standards
- Direct and/or produce plans that conform to company design and drafting standards, minimizing QA/QC review time
- Direct and/or generate plans from scratch as well as handling redlines from engineers and project managers
- Manage workload (either personally or through delegation with selected team members) and work product of the Civil Sector CAD team
- Coordinate use of drafting tools between different disciplines, e.g., Civil 3D, Revit, Plant 3D, and/or MicroStation.
- Develop and maintain companywide CAD standards, Civil CAD Design Manual, and instructional videos
- Develop and implement work flows and design processes
- Provide QA/QC review of CAD team work and participate in companywide QA/QC reviews as necessary
- Develop and implement training program for the efficient use of CAD programs and tools; conduct training with all company CAD users
- Develop and manage a new service offering from SGM that provides training to selected companies wishing to further educate themselves and their staff for the proper operation of Civil3D, Revit, Plant 3D and/or MicroStation.
- Stay apprised of, and communicate with company leadership about, developments in engineering design technologies (such as AI), and help SGM take advantage of the improvements in efficiency, turnaround time, accuracy and quality such tools may enable.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Progressive experience with CAD drafting and design
- Strong Civil 3D design experience
- Experience with alignments, surfaces, corridors and pipe networks
- Knowledge of earthwork calculations
- Proven ability to work as part of a team to successfully deliver projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook and Excel
- Ability to work independently when needed and be self-motivated
- Experience developing and maintaining CAD standards, design manuals and videos
- Experience providing CAD training and mentoring to co-workers as well as selected paying clients seeking training and mentoring on CAD, Revit, Plant 3D and/or Microstation.
- Progressive supervisory experience
- An interest and proclivity in being forward-looking to exploit new technologies for design process innovation
- Valid driver's license
Additional/Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience with CDOT plan preparation and/or MicroStation
- Experience with BIM, Revit and other 3D building design software
- Water/Wastewater treatment plant and piping design experience
- Associates Degree in CAD and/or certification in Civil 3D is a plus
